Octavia VRS worries

Featured Replies

Good afternoon folks,

I'm after some advice, I've just purchased a 2006 Octavia VRS 2.0 petrol with 171,000 kilometres. When I bought the car it was slightly low on oil and I topped it up hoping that a "diesely" noise at idle would disappear but to no avail, it's going to my mechanic tomorrow for a look over and to see can we sort it however neither of us have any idea where to start, Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated! I'm worried I've bought a lemon!

Cheers

When was the last oil change? If a change is about due the engine can sometimes be quietly tappetty.

Could be the cam follower as they are very prone to wear on these engines.

Cheers Ken,

First thing we thought of, it was quite low and we topped it up, drove it a bit yesterday but it doesn't seem to have the desired affect!!

Phil,

First time I have heard of it, big job do you know?

These engines are quite noisy any way seems to be nosiy injectors

oil and filter changed that will be a start :)

I would hazard a guess and say It may be worth replacing the chain and tensioner, as well as the camshaft follower. When the cam chain cover is removed you can get a much better view of the cam lobe that drives the hpfp

Cam belt on a 2006. Chain didn't come in until the TSI ~2009

I'm aware of that, but I'm talking about the chain that ties the inlet camshaft to the exhaust camshaft under the cam chain cover at the other end of the engine. Look at the pictures in my previously posted link.

Hi folks,

Thanks so much for the replies, filled the car with 5w30 fully and a new filter and engine flush. If anything the car is slightly louder than previous. My mechanic feels that the noise suggests tappetts, any opinions on doing them greatly appreciated, he also mentioned checking oil pressure when doing the job?

Hi,

Replacement of camshaft follower isn't big job. Part costed me around £30 plus labour. Mine was slightly worned after 205k kilometres, so I recommend to check it during engine oil service.

Thats a great link....im going to check my cam follower next month so this link will help.
