Space saver reprise

Featured Replies

Hi all after a 4 year absence I'm back in the fold and looking forward to getting involved with the forum again  :sun:

I've bought a nearly new  2016 tsi VRS and disappointed to find it only has tyre goo. I apologise in advance for repetition and I have read previous posts on this, but im not technical and still non the wiser as to exactly what I need and where to get it from. I was horrified to see the price of the skoda option. Can someone please tell me in simple terms what space saver alternative to the skoda dealer option I need to buy. Cheers in advance

You will need a minimum of a 17" rim to clear the brakes on the TSI. Bolt pattern is 5x112, not sure of offset. Unless you are lucky with a scrapped car, eBay, or another website, you will probably have to pay the asking price for a space saver. As an alternative, a full size spare will fit in the wheel well circumference wise, but will sit proud height wise, raising the floor slightly. I know someone on here has made a wooden frame to ensure the floor ended up level on theirs. You will of course need a jack and tools too...

Thanks both. I think the Vrs is an 18inch space saver but I don't understand why I need Skods or if there is a cheaper 18 inch space saver of the same size that would fit? There seems lots of space saver wheels out there for £70???

The full size wheel does indeed stick out approx. an inch (in my vRS Hatch). I found a new full size wheel on a dealer web site but it was the last one. There was no way I was going to rely on the goo that's for sure.

Mine only came with the tire goo too, but in Denmark we have free Skoda Road assistance on cars from 1997 and up, as long as it's had its service done at an authorised Skoda shop.

The Skoda Road assistance covers:

  • Repairs on site
  • Flats
  • Locked in keys
  • Running out of fule
  • Towing
  • Traffic accidents
  • Salvaging and if you're stuck
  • Theft
  • Free car while in the shop
  • Alternative transport if necessary (train, bus)
  • Hotel stays if necessary

So if I get a flat I can just call them, and they take me to the nearest tire shop to get it fixed.

in the summer time I do however always have one of my winter tires in the well, for back up
