Hello everyone,

 

Have noticed my good old Octy 2.0 PD BKD has developed some sort of grinding, knocking or even tapping sound on the gearbox side of the engine bay at idle. I think it's definitely louder when the engine has warmed up. It's definitely intermittent and to me it doesn't sound too good. I have attached an audio file so you can hear for yourselfs but not sure if you can hear it but it comes and goes. I've also noticed the engine shudders quite along with this noise in question.

Just wanted to add that you can definitely hear at the beginning of the recording 4-5 seconds.

How many miles has your car done? To me that sounds like a worn dual mass flywheel. What leads me to that is, I had a very similar sound on my old Fabia VRS. The problem is, I didn't replace it myself, I took it to unit 18 in Wolverton, so I can't really offer any further technical input. I could notice a very distinct change in the sound when operating the clutch pedal, and although I wasn't experiencing any clutch slip, unit 18 did feed back that the clutch was knackered as well. Car had done over 100k miles though with 6 previous owners.

Thanks for your time in replying to my post the noise is definitely the same in the video but mine is more noticeable now as this is my 4th year of ownership. The car had 4 previous owners and has now done 144K and is still going strong in my opinion, however that grinding was definitely playing on my mind and I'm glad I was not going crazy, what I also noticed sometimes especially on a cold engine is when I press the clutch down I get some sort of grinding noise too but this is intermittent it's not always there.

 

Looks like I will be spending a bit of money now hey something to add just after I replaced a rear near side caliper on Saturday morning.
