wiper problem

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a wiper issue as in no wipers to the front. Its not the usual right hand side arm popping off the mechanism but just no power to the motor. Fuse seems ok so I wondered if anyone knows if the wipers somehow wire through the door wiring, to a control module or convenience unit of some description. I ask as I know some of those little wires in the door bellows pinch and snap, causing failure of the component it supplies power to. I have the car being looked at by a well known reputable workshop and they have had no luck yet tracing the problem. I mentioned wires in the door loom snapping but they think it unlikely as there is no reason for wipers to wire via the door bellow. (A two minute check each side COULD save hours of hunting around like a hunting thing looking for a very small hunted thing)!

I only thought of this AFTER handing them the car as I too didn't expect wipers to wire through the door but hey- you never know!

Do you know there is no power to the motor? Or is that an assumption?

Have you checked switch functions with VCDS?

Wiper function would not be effected by door wiring.

The workshop says they tested motor and it works, as they are often the weak-spot. There seems to be no power supply to the motor, either from the switch or somewhere else as they have yet to discover where the fault lies. The door wiring was just an inquiry as I know wires break and Skoda being an awkward bunch of French connectors, like to wire things via convenience  modules etc, rather then straight forward electrics. Funny how, if you remove a fuse for the washer/wiper system, the rear wiper activates when you operate the front wipers, for example! It has often been mentioned that front wipers won't work if the bonnet is open... Mine do [Or did, until this fault] So consistency isn't overly paramount at the factory!

I haven't checked with VCDS as I have no way to do this but the workshop is a well known VAG group specialist based in Woodford, Essex. Just on the outskirts of London. Don't wanna name them yet but if you know of them, I think they are well respected.

Intermittent wipers won't work when the bonnet is open but other speeds will.

According to the Haynes manual, theres supposed to be a winter/service function on the wipers too, whereby you operate the wipers within ten seconds of switching off the ignition and the wipers sweep to the vertical position prior to stopping... Never noticed that but I have often, on many cars, raised the wipers normally and switched off the ignition mid-sweep in order to stop the wipers half way up/down, thus making it easier to work on them.

Also known as service mode.
