Painting Mud Flaps

Featured Replies

On my last car, I purchased  a full set of mudflaps and painted them the same colour as the car before I fitted them.  I was initially very pleased with the results as it made the mudflaps look like part of the car rather than an add-on.

However, within 18 months, the paint started to flake off in big strips leaving the mudflaps the same way as I had purchased them, even though I had prepared the mud flaps properly and used a normal car paint primer (grey).  I suspect the primer to blame for not sticking to the plastic mud flaps.

Has anyone painted mud flaps successfully(or a plastic bumper) and if so, what primer did you use and any other tips you can give me.

Many thanks.

For Plastic Bumper, Dash boards etc you will find Plastic Primer in Halfords, Motor Factors or online.

That is the stuff to use if you have non flexible mud flaps you want to paint.

Honestly I think that looks terrible.

The flaps on the SIII are so unobtrusive that you barely notice them; that makes them stick out like a dodgy sore thumb.

This is mine with the standard flaps:

You need to add a "Plasticine" to the paint when you paint plastic parts.

You can't just use normal primer and paint.

Talk to a paint shop.

'Plasticine', must be a different product in Australia from the Modelling clay it is in Europe.

Prepping Plastic correctly and then using Plastic Primer works just fine with the same paint used elsewhere, as long as it is not flexible plastic.

I served my time as a spray painter, cars and industry.

(plenty on Youtube showing products and techniques.)

Thank you for all your replies.  Looks are all a matter of taste and what one person likes, another may hate but life would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

I did look at Halfords Plastic Primer and I thought that was the answer but when I went into the store and read the tin, it stated it was not suitable for Mud Flaps!!!   I must admit to being surprised.

However, I will try it as the Mud Flaps are not that flexible and GoneOffSki is recommending it.  He has the experience I was looking for when requesting for an answer.

Thanks again all.
