I'm thinking of coming away from my superb.

Featured Replies

never been a victim of columbus theft but when i was travelling and staying in hotels, leaving car in long term airport car parks ets, then i would remove the columbus myself just to reduce the theft risk.

keep the superb until it starts to cost you big money   great car.

Brake fluid change interval is at 3 years old, then every two years.

A bit overkill in my opinion, but it's only my opinion.

Brake fluid is quite hygroscopic. Over 2 years it'll absorb more than enough water to cause boiling under hard use.

As it's the 2 litre petrol (it would have had the 6 speed DSG as standard, there was no manual option). It's a great set up and pretty bullet proof. With regular servicing it should go on for years. I have had mine for four years and wouldn't consider selling it. As your know the trade is pretty poor. Stand back and look at it and ask yourself would you be as comfortable in anything else?

I must admit the sat nav theft has unnerved me. I'm going to see a band at a nearby pub tonite and will be taking the missus's run around.

From memory I see D7 displayed when I'm cruising. It's 1787cc I think

You need to be working the brakes very hard to boil modern brake fluid.

I've been known to work the old girl on a few fast runs to work but the Superb isn't a car to be throwing around so no plans to take her to a track day anytime soon  :D

That makes it  a 1.8 TSI with a 7 speed DSG. The 2.0 would be 1984cc with a 6 speed DSG I think.

If the fluid is in good condition, sure. DOT4 boils at 230 *C, but that drops to 155 *C once it has absorbed water (3.7 % water by volume in the fluid to be exact). If you left the fluid for several years without changing it, you'd see a serious drop in BP and loss of braking performance.

Yes it's got tsi on the back

Yes it's got tsi on the back

is it elegance spec and what colour
  • Author

It's a light silvery blueish .

I don't know what elegance spec is.

Had a mooch on the interweb thingy.

It might be the elegance because it's got heated leather seats. Should it have headlight washers?

Does this mean it's quite good?

It's also got a little plastic clip inside the windscreen to hold the ticket out of a parking machine which I find very useful.

Elegance is the second highest spec level in the UK and Ireland. The only higher factory spec is the Laurin and Klement. The main Elegance toys in the UK are heated front leather seats, bi-xenon headlights, climate control, Columbus satnav, 18" wheels. Ireland gets heated rear seats as well but 17" wheels.

1.8 TSI will have cam chain so no belt service required but on a 2011 car will not have the latest spec of chain tensioner. I think they kept updating the tensioner every year until 2013 so I would recommend a chain tensioner replacement, will cost about £400 or about £600-800 if you go the whole hog and get a new chain fitted but that requires more dismantling hence much higher labour cost. If you stick with a 2011 tensioner the risk is it goes bang and wrecks the engine which could cost over £5k to replace. There is a thread on Octy II forum that goes into more detail. Cars with full SUK service record seem to be getting repaired with about 90% good will contribution from SUK as the part was supposed to be non-servicable but you have to be savvy to negotiate this as first offer is usually no contribution on cars over 3yrs old.

Flipping ek. You got me worried now. My last but one car was a minded. Cam belt went on the motorway. Wrecked the engine. Car was scrapped. Should I contact the main dealer to see what to do?

Is SUK Skoda uk?

The car has always been serviced at a skoda dealer.

My Irish dealer defined an L&K as an Elegance fitted with the optional "Laurin & Klement Luxury Pack"

For my model year, I think you could only get L&K on a 2.0 170 hp diesel.

Main dealer will probably quote about £500 for tensioner only or about £1000 for full chain set including tensioner and guides. That would include a 2yr warranty on those parts/labour and any consequential failure. A good independent or VAG speciallist will be cheaper, but warranty will only be 12 months and probably give SUK get out of jail card for any future good will if it failed. We had a 2009 1.8 TSI Octy and decided to trade it in at 6.5yrs old before the mileage got too high, was on less than 40k but was only worth about £4,500 so we swapped it for a 2013 Leon with the next generation TSI which hopefully sorts the tensioner and oil burning issues.

Tough decision, my MK II Superb was a great car, although mine was diesel, it gave me 90k miles trouble free over the 4 yrs I had it.

If you want peace of mind, go to a dealer or try Warranty Wise!

Btw, SUK is Skoda UK. They import Skoda's to the UK and sell to dealers hence any good will is via SUK, not the supplying dealer.

I've started a separate thread relating to the chain tensioner, thanks Matt

Yeah that was it on the MKII.  It was a no-brainer for me as the price differential between the Elegance 170 (which I had before) and the L&K was a little over €1K from what I remember.  L&K spec was 18" Sirius wheels, canton sound system (albeit not as comprehensive a system as found in the new MkIII version), KESSY, raised floor mats in the rear, sunset glass and all the L&K seat stitching and logos dotted around the place.  Not so with the MKIII of course, €4K difference now but with (a bit) more spec of course so a more difficult decision now.

I think you've made the right call there, for all sorts of reasons!
