Folding Rig - Up & Running !!

Featured Replies

Well that was nice and hassle free, ordered parts Friday - arrived Saturday and set to building last night when I got home from work.

Absolutely straightforward - no hassles,I'm writing this thread using it whilst it quitely folds away - it's been running almost 11 hours now -- no problems and CPU running @ 43 degrees with stock AMD cooler.

Will probably let it run for a week or so and then I'll look at upgrading the cooler and winding the clock up a little ;)

The Spec :

  • Thermaltake Soprano Case
  • Akasa PaxPower 400W PSU
  • Asus A8N-VM PCI-Express nForce 4 Motherboard
  • AMD Opteron 144 - 1.8Ghz 1Mb Cache
  • 1 Gb Corsair XMS Pro Series 3200 Memory ( 2 x 512 Matched)
  • Samsung 52x CD
  • Hitachi Deskstar 80Gb Hard Drive

Just got to wait for it to complete it's first WU now

Is the opteron faster than the AMD 64 ? I've got lost on what is quicker just lately (Don't like INTEL)and have got to update a couple of PCs at home soon so am looking for best speed per buck ........let us know how it goes later

The Opteron has a larger Cache - 1mb instead of 512k - whilst it's not much it all helps - also they respond very well to overclocking(with better cooler) and are litteraly cheap as chips(computer chips that is)

Other than that the clock speeds are the same -- my other PC is an AMD 64 3000 which is also 1.8ghz but with only 512k cache and older core(winchester) the opteron core(san diego?) has a more up todate memory controller.

I have got a AMD 64 3500 (pretty certain thats the winchester core)........but the kids are starting to look at it now so I just know what is coming  ...how are the opteron ones rated (I can understand the amd 3000, 3400 etc) as they go 144 right up to 880 at $2600:eek:

Spacers.... :finger::rofl:

I just a working XP PRO disk to get mine running now. Fluff is on the case. ;) Looks nice though. :D

Sorry Jason.... I just couldn't resist :o

I was lucky, this build went fine - not always the case - had some problems with the last one I built. I'll let this one run for a couple of weeks before I start tweaking it

Using the graphical client at the mo -- using it as a burn in test with it on quickest drawing to load it fully

Damn, and just spotted a +1 in your sig pic, and a -1 in my sig pic. :thumbdwn: :D:rofl:

The opteron...

ok the first index is a index of how many ways the chip can be used, or in a more straight forward way, a dual cpu motherboard would use a 2##. so upto 8 way would use a 8##, although I think you can use an 8## in a dual mobo setup etc...

I think that might help, if not, 1## for normal 939 boards, 2## for 940 boards with upto two cpu sockets, more, you need an 8way 8##

Will an opteron CPU just plug straight into my socket 939 motherboard? :D

I suspect I'll be happy with my 3500, but opteron sounds so "jurassic park" :D

Altogether including the the 17"TFT monitor just over 600 quid, but it will also be a backup storage for all my MP3's and some photo's and stuff.

And Jason..

Yes a S939 Opteron will drop straight in your motherboard:thumbup:
