Engine not starting - Fuel issue

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I've had trouble starting my fabia vrs today. The engine turned over nicely and the battery worked fine. The RAC came out and diagnosed air getting into the fuel system (because of the fuel priming sound when the key was turned to ignition) they then used some bradex easy start which started the engine fine.

I've since started the car a few times and it has been fine.

My question: I understand how the bradex started the engine but if I have air in the fuel system how would the engine keep running and sustain itself? Surely the fuel air mix would still be incorrect and the engine would cut out?

Thanks for your time any technical input would be much appreciated

The engine won't turn fast enough to clear the air and get fuel. Adding fuel (easy start) gets it going and higher engine speed will consume the air.

Doesn't resolve why air is there in the first place mind you. And the lift pump in the tank always makes a noise when priming.

You need to get it scanned with VCDS to see if there are any fault codes.

Could be something like the crank sensor.

Many thanks for the replies, cheers for the explanation tech1e.

I've plugged a code reader in and it's given me "p0727"

Which is indeed the crank sensor.

I must be psychic

Quick check when suspecting a crank sensor is does the rev counter move when cranking.

Superb, you must be!

Thanks Tech1e I'll have a look at that tomorrow. Do you guys know if these sensors are easy to locate and access on a fabia vrs?

Yes they are easy enough to get to and not that expensive. However a fault code with the sensor doesn't mean the sensor is at fault.

When I changed one on the 1.4 TDI 3 pot it was a bit of a ball ache,I seem to recall taking one of the coolant hoses off the oil cooler but it may be easier on the 1.9. I think I paid £15 for a genuine used one.

Could you give me a bit more info on this ? what am I looking for when watching the rev counter when cranking ?

If the crank sensor is faulty the rev counter needle won't move as it gets its signal from that sensor.

Just to let you guys know it was the crankshaft position sensor on mine. It had disintegrated.
