Shaky engine, weird sound

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have a Skoda Fabia Compis 2002 1.4 MPI engine code AZF

The car itself is running great, 130 000km on it, oil regulary changed

The problem I have is that only on IDLE the car becomes shaky when you sit inside you can feel a bit of juggles now and then, like misfiring. When driving no problems at all everything is perfect only on idle this happens and also the engine itself sounds weird. I have read some on the forum here and I saw some people say that this is a normal thing for this type of engine because of the car trying to have as low emissions as possible, but still I want to comfirm this because a lot of people that look at my car ask me whats wrong with your car, why does it do that?

Took it to a garage and they connected autocom in it and only one code comes up, P0441 EVAP Emission Control Sys: Incorrect Flow

They also checked real time data that showed no misfires from any cylinders.  According to them this code is the main culprit for this behaviour of the engine and they said some valve should be changed and everything will be good. But I thought to ask here too what u guys think can this code cause the engine to sound all weird and shaky on idle? And is it really a valve that causes all this.

I made a short video, the shake of the engine cant be seen that good but at least the engine sounding weird can be heard clearly. Tell me what u guys think, thank you

The shakey idle for the MPi is perfectly normal and well documented. However it sounds like your timing chain is up for replacement, this will help idle stability a bit.

The evap fault is unrelated. It could be the purge valve but equally the charcoal canister might be at the end of its useful life.

So this sound comes from the timing chain being bad?

Difficult to say exactly from the video but it's where I'd start looking.

Your timing chain definitely sounds like it's rattling but it always happens on these engines because there is no chain tensioner in the design, and as soon as the chain stretches it starts to rattle. In my experience, a new chain will last about 20,000 miles before it starts rattling again. It's something you either live with or get the chain changed. As much as they rattle I've never heard of one snapping. Mine rattles at 65,000 miles but I just live with it for now.

Okay thank you, good to know I'm not in too big of a trouble. So we come to a conclusion that the shaky engine is normal, the timing chain is a bit bad and except that this EVAP code is not that big of a deal, so all is good?

Try a secondhand purge valve off ebay, I picked one up for about a tenner.  6Q0906517 is the part number.

I found that my engine was more shaky when my battery was failing as it put more strain on the alternator and thus strain on the engine. It improved a lot with a new battery. Your battery might be fine though.
