2012 MK2 Octavia VRS - cat back for DSG upshift noises

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Did a bit of searching but couldn't find what I wanted ... does someone have a pic of the undercarriage of the Octavia MK2 ?

I want to see what the exhaust set up is like ... does it have a centre silencer or a resonator ?

My main question is ... will removing it allow the car to do the DSG upshift fart sounds (I know ... so juvenile).

If it is a resonator in the middle, chances are that removing it may cause droning in the cabin - not too keen on that - perhaps changing it to a different diameter resonator may work ?  If it is a silencer, can I just remove it and replace it with a straight pipe ?

I noticed that the centre silencer was removed on a Fabia VRS2 and it's the kind of outcome I am after .. http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/378031-skoda-fabia-vrs-mk2-exhaust-modification-done-with-videos/#entry4436388

Short of doing that ... I may need to do a cat back system ... the Jetex system looks good but looks to be no less than AUD $1,000 landed ...

This us the only picture I've got, it may help though!

Actually looking at it, I don't think it's a std exhaust system.

Cheers dude .. i think i have seen a similar one .. is that a stock VRS Mk2 ?

I will get under my car tonight to have a look see ... dont know how much I am going to be able to see though without it being up on the hoist.

Yeah, it's definately not a standard exhaust( looks like a Miltek) as the original is one piece design.

However I'm 99% sure the std system has two boxes and they are in the same position as in the picture. The pre cat and main cat do a lot to quieten down the standard set up.

Pre cat main cat?

Ok I think that I get you now ... So do we have:

Muffler

Another muffler

Resonator

Cat? (Can't see)

The pre cat is in the downpipe and sits about an inch away from the turbo, it's job is to warm up the main cat quicker by creating a flow restriction.

Ok, I just went under my car and can only see:

Muffler 1

Muffler 2

No resonator

02 sensor

Catalytic converter

Does that sound right?

That's probably why the vrs is so damn quiet ... 2 mufflers ..

So the next question is since there is no resonator to cut off... is a cat back exhaust the next cheapest way to get DSG pops / farts ?

Do you really think upshift pops and farts are possible even if there was no exhaust fitted?

Ok, I just went under my car and can only see:

Muffler 1

Muffler 2

No resonator

02 sensor

Catalytic converter

Does that sound right?

Muffler 1

Muffler 2

Straight pipe

02 Sensor

Catalytic converter

Pre cat

02 Sensor

I think that's the order from rear bumper to turbo.

I'd imagine the two cats do as much to silence the system as the two rear boxes.

My mk2 pre FL VRS did not have the box closest to the axel, it had a circular resonator in the tunnel and the rear box only.

Hmm so it had a different setup to the MK2 ? Did it sound decent ?

The MK2 sounds so quiet.  It really is the perfect family car .. and it is going to take some UN-DOING to make it how I like it ... tune, coilovers, turbo back exhaust system ...

Yeah it was surprisingly loud for a standard car, the exhaust was all one piece too so it's not as if it had been altered.

When I say loud it was still a good bit quieter than my non resonated milltek but it had a nice growl to it.

The exhaust on mine was very similar to the mk4 golf set up with the rear box and then the circular resonator just before the right angle bend at the end of the tunnel.

This must be back when cars weren't required to be silent due to emissions.  Quite like the subtle noises from the GTIs.

So I finally found the standard VRS exhaust setup !

So it does looks like we 2 mufflers or can someone confirm the one closer to the front of the car is a resonator ?  If it is a resonator, I could always:

1) replace with a straight pipe

2) replace with a smaller hot dog style resonator
