Can someone tell me...

How often should I change the oil in my intercooler? ;)

Is this serious?

On the assumption that it is, there shouldn't be any oil in your intercooler, because Octy 1s use air-air intercoolers. If there is oil in it, you should drain it, and may be heading for needing a new turbo, because that oil is from either the turbo seals or the crankcase ventilation system.

Maybe fit a "catch can", to reduce or eliminate oil from the crank case getting to the intercooler.

Vehicles that have oil-air intercoolers tend to use the engine oil, so the intercooler oil gets changed with the lubricant services.

Thanks for the replies.

It is actually a problem at the moment. I first noticed it a couple of years ago when I did the cambelt. A couple of days ago, while under the front doing an oil and filter change, I noticed a small patch gathering in the corner of the front bumper under the intercooler. Time constraints me I won't get a chance to look properly yet.

My son, who owns a 51 plate VRS has suggested it is a turbo problem. Ho-hum, start looking for a local service agent I suppose  :dull:

Best thing to do will be to remove the intercooler and the pipes, then thoroughly clean and dry them. It may just be built up deposits over a long time frame that are now starting to leak out. There will always be a slight misting of oil in the intercooler and pipes, as there will always be some oil vapour escaping into there from some point, be it the breather system or the turbo seals. Heavy oil contamination would need investigating though.

Re check the pipes after a couple of weeks to see what has accumulated in the intervening time.

Thanks for the replies.

You might also check the PAS fluid level.
