Mp3-sat Nav Woe

You should be able to buy an aftermarket changer that will work with your HU but TBH the best you can hope for is a 6 or 10 disc CD changer with mp3 playback capability although you probably couldn't have directory levels as the HU may not be able to navigate them. The changer wouldn't fit straight into the boot either. You would have to have it screwed into place somewhere.Best bet is probably a Denison Icelink and an Ipod. You get basic control the Ipod through the HU and steering wheel controls.

Alternatively you can wait until I get off my **** and build an aux adapter to replace your autochanger. Then you can plug in any mp3 player you like although you couldn't control it through the steering wheel controls.

Thanks my George Clooney look-alike:thumbup:

I currently don’t have an ipod' date=' spent all my cash on this bloomin’ Octy that never seems to be getting built, but you’ve given me hope. I had this fanciful idea that I could convert many of my CDs to mp3 and so get ‘more stuff’ onto a CD multi-changer. Then I had the (probably) daft idea, if a PC can read a DVD with mp3 on it, then why couldn’t some Auto-changers? I’m not too worried about the loss of quality in a car as if anything the data compression could actually be beneficial in the noisy environs of a car. I do have one probably really daft question (if you don’t mind) does the Auto changer send data or an analogue signal to the HU? Kinda always wondered. [/size']

Thanks again, you certainly seem to know your stuff.:)

Look into the Phatnoise Phatbox too - basically a MP3 jukebox that uses the CD changer connection on the headunit. I have one in my Fabia, not sure if they're compatible with the newer HUs. I'm sure they will be.

The system comes with a 20gb cartridge, but these can be swapped, if you run out of room in the future :)

It comes with a USB cradle to load the music on from your PC. All works fine. I got mine shipped over from the States. Worked out about £170 inc VAT.

Worth a look for you I think - IMO a much better solution than a CD changer.

Steve

Phatnoise sounds like a nice bit of kit but i wasn't keen on the voice feedback for navigatiing directories etc. I'm going for aux adapter and boot mounted mstation mp3 player. I won't have control from the steering wheel but will have a full digital controller and display to mount on the dash. mstations are now out of production but you still see the odd one on Ebay. 40Gb is all the storage I need although it's a diy job if i want to upgrade to 120Gb

If the MFD2 is anything like my original MFD satnav, then it is possible to easily add AUX in capabilities to it via a special adapter. Not only do you get aux in for audio, but you also get composite and s-video in.

From what I understand the MFD2 is basically the same as the original MFD, but with a cosmetic facelift. Certainly, the nav. disks for the MFD still work in the MFD2. I know, as I've recently given my TMC enabled MFD disk to a colleague and it works find in his OctyII satnav.

Once you have audio and video inputs, you could get the Centurion CENDVD6 changer, which can play DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs, MP3s (from DVD) and audio CDs. It has an onscreen interface, and is controlled via a separate remote. I'm using this changer with a Pioneer AVIC-X1 in my Superb, and it works brilliantly. As a bonus, you can get one for around

control signals are digital but audio is analogue

On the subject of the Phatbox, it can be made to work with the Nav system, but it's not straightforward.

for details on how to do it. This does require decent soldering skills, so is not a project for the novice. I'm sure there are a few peeps on here who could do the work (myself included), so don't worry if you do decide to go this route.

That's a piece of ****. Might effect warranty of the Phatbox though.

It definitely voids the Phatbox warranty, but apparently you can modify the changer cable to avoid having to do the soldering. The problem seems to be getting the right connectors to make the adapter cable.

From what I can tell, there was a company making the adapter cables, but I can't find them right now.

It seems that the MFD and MFD2 units don't use the same control signals as the factory fit head units. The VW changer can cope with the differences, but things like the Phatbox can't.

Does it show that much? I seem to have been single since I got rid of my last Impreza Turbo, funny that! Still it means I’m pretty self sufficient and can change a tyre (if I can get the ruddy nuts off) and have even changed an exhaust system on a car once. (It was many years ago and it was quite an easy one to do) I painted the outside of my house last year, right to the top….well almost, I just couldn’t reach the eaves as they were about 30 something feet up in the air. Love F1 as well, although I’ve started watching the GP bikes lately as they are soooooo much more exiting and that Valentino Rossi guy is fabulous, although not what you would describe as a hunk sadly. Think I scare men off! :orb_sad:

Now you are just teasing. And how did you know i'm the spit of George Clooney anyway.

this applies to north american phatboxes as it says in the navi site page

european phatboxes work with navi units, according to the phatbox site, look for the section for identifying the radio type in the setup of the phatbox there is a note about american units not working with navi

I have applied your new settings to my mental image of George Clooney and will use this as my default whenever I think of you

I kind of look a bit like a tall Charlotte Rampling with a bit of Helen Hunt thrown in, then shaken up and down till I look like I've dragged through a hedge backwards and haven't eaten for a couple of weeks:eek:

I’ve just had a look at all of ‘you guys’ public profiles and you all seem to be Electrical engineers or IT guys. Don’t you find all this wiring stuff a bit like a Cooks holiday? I'm grateful for the advice though.

The Electrical Engineer thing is just a cover. I could tell what i really do but i'd have to kill you. Lets just say my car has a few deadly extras not mentioned in my profile if you know what i mean.

Well I hope my car will have a few extras if
