hello need help with choosing stand alone home security camera day/night with at least 5m range..seen plenty on ebay argos etc but too many to choose from...be nice to have live video feed and notifications....anything up to £100 if poss...like to get some info from folks who have at least used one they can recommend...may thanks in advanced david

can't help much but after listening to complaints on Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 earlier I'd steer well clear of Hikvision (pronounced Hyk vision apparently). Chinese company and their security can't be trusted.

before sighting ,if it records outside home, ask local Police for advice ref recording area. That way ,you prevent any problems with the local legal experts with yob kids, who'll swear blind there's some "perv" taking photos of children.

That's interesting as I was mulling over a Hikvision camera. They have very good reviews for the actual quality of the footage and functionality.

What were the complaints for? Hack ability?

I think that was a small part of the bigger picture. Prices low due to being Chinese state owned and controlled and images going back to China.

Maybe I'll give it a wide berth.

Although images of me sat in the living room with naff all on after a heavy session on Saturday night being received by some Chinese official in a darkened room makes me chuckle.

I've also been looking at this one -

Great specs, not been released very long so not got many reviews yet. Only downside for me is that it with it being so new it hasn't yet been supported by Synology, so can't integrate fully with my NAS. Hopefully not too long though :)

I've got my toes on the edge of the line for buying a Reolink (RLC420) cam. Need a IP66/67 rated cam thats as small as possible for a non-security setup. And their range seem cheap while ticking a lot of boxes.

Not sure if they're applicable to what you're after, but I've only heard good things about the picture quality, and they seem cheap as chips in the grand scheme of things.

Anything that is IP based is probably quite a big target.

Check Shodan to see if the appear online in big numbers. It might just be a matter of not being lazy and having to change the default login creds. Doubtful anyone will spend actual time trying to hack you they'll move on to the next Shodan target.

I'd guess a night camera will need a fairly substantial IR light source to work out to 5m.

MY question would be 'What are these children doing on somebody else property?????

THAT is why I advised Police advice. It makes them aware of possible problems from feral kids. This sort seem to think that any front garden is theirs to run amok in, unless you ( or local biker group) advise that trespass might produce problems. ( Not advising this course of action, but problems stopped after daughter & SIL  dropped off GS .Daughter had car, daughter was in leathers, as were a few of his mates).

I got a visit from a PCSO after we had balls bouncing off car/front door etc, by bunch of Feral kids, who's dad seems to think I mentioned car sales from council property to local council ,and he had a visit. I have no cameras set up at moment, but I'd think my comment on recording my property with copy to council touched a raw nerve, and producing a camera when he tried to stop me driving down the road ( I'd suggest attempted harassment/intimidation, judging by his shouts) .

NO such thing as a feral kid!!!!

They are just kids who need a good smacking to sort them out.  :D

I use a Nest Cam at home. Slightly more expensive, but ease of setup etc is pretty good

Without hijacking the thread, I am getting (subject to costings) a FULL 1080p CCTV system with 4 cameras initially but want to be able to add up to 8 cameras as funds allow in the future.

The first 4 cameras will be outdoor covering various areas of the house, and the next 4 will cover inside to capture anybody who DOES manage to get in...........................we also have an ADT monitored wireless security system too. :D

Got IPS Fire & Security coming tomorrow afternoon for a site survey and quote for the CCTV.

Plenty of feral parents

Not the kids- it's the parents. I've found that in case of either, ask SIL and a few mates to visit us,on bikes ,in full leathers, and there's no need for any more aggro .

Never did this on purpose, but for a while we had problems with one family . Found out he'd taken umbrage after a council visit on his vehicle sales activity ,and one local drug dealer scrote had fingered us as the family that informed. For weeks, car was the target of ball attacks. Then one Sunday, daughter brought GS round. She was in leathers,in her car  and SIL + a few mates arrived on bikes. Suddenly , the problems stopped. I met the bikers at the wedding, and you'd never meet a ncer bunch of blokes.
