My girlfriend has just bought a 2nd hand car from a ford dealership, she has 1yr warranty on it, and has brought it home today. Having a look at the tyres They all have 6mm+ tread, except the rear passenger side, which has around 3mm. The two backs are the same tyre, and the two fronts (whilst different to the rear) are the same tyre. And the spare seems to be an entirely different tyre alltogether.

Basically, is it a bad thing to have such a different wear rate on the back two tyres? Should it be something to mention to the dealer? Obviously apart from the nuisance of replacing the tyres at different times, would the two (basically different size) tyres have a bad effect on handling/tracking/wear etc?

I'm not really knowing anything about tyres, except that my Eagle F1 GSD-3's should arrive this week :thumbup:

Mort. It's industry standard practice in the UK to have the best tyres on the rear. On this basis I'd chance having a chat with the dealer to see their take on the matter.

If it was just the fact that the rear two were worse than the front, I wouldn't mind so much, as I could just swap them, but with the rear drivers side being 6mm and the rear passenger side being 3mm, I was just a bit confused as to how that actually happens, as it can't be a good thing - can it?

Its always nice to have same make tyres and similar tread depths, but they could have had a non repairable puncture and had a new tyre put on thus the uneven wear:confused: You could always put the 3mm to spare and buy a new one to match the 6mm one as from new most tyres have 8mm......Only makes a difference if you have a full time 4x4 then all tread depths should be even

don't you think they swapped them about before they sold it?

This happened on my Skoda when they were preparing it. Unrepairable puncture in rear driver's side so ended up with a brand new tyre to replace it and the other side had 4mm of tread..... Fortunately for me, the spare was practically brand new so I switched the spare and the worn tyre....

Fiesta is a Front wheel drive?? car so surely best tyres on the front wheels, as rears don't require same grip etc. Allways swap my wheels back to front corner to corner annually to even out wear etc. (unless rears wider than fronts- but would indicate rear wheel drive). Certainly would expect fronts to be more worn so may have been swapped rond at some point whilst other swapped round after earlier replacement? is spare tyre a new one or as it got 6mm on??? if only 3mm may have been swapped over to make car look better on forecourt?

The spare looks new, but is a completely different tyre to both the front and the backs on the car.

May get it out and see if it's worth swapping. But obviously it's a steel spare and the others are alloys, so it would be a trip to a tyre place to get the rims swapped if we went that route.

just drive the car. it's a fiesta. it wont spoil the ride. aslong as they are legal don't worry.

:thumbdwn: No... new way of thinking is best two tyres go to rear regardless of front/rear wheel drive, The rear you are not in control of so best should go here;)

Iam sure it was on top gear but it was proved that your best tyres should go on the back weather your car being rear wheel or front wheel drive.

It went on to show when you lose control of the car with A* back tyres it was easyer to get back the control. Ive also been told that you should keep you axles the same tread depth and tyre make. Id try doing a deal with the dealer for a cheap tyre, if not a free replacement seeing as she has just bought the thing.

Cheers :thumbup:. Sounds like a good idea. See if they'll change it free and if not see if they'll do it cheap.
