Timing chain problem

Featured Replies

Hello!

I've recently owned a Fabia 1.2 (06 reg). It has served me well and just gone round the clock.

I sent it to our local garage (not a Skoda dealer) to get a new MOT and service and a general tidy up as I was going to give it to my brother. I like and trust the garage.

It needed a few things doing (e.g. new catalytic converter) & I had a few extras done (e.g. new tyres) and the bill came to over £1k (a bit eye-watering!!) I also asked them to change the cam belt but was told that this didn't need doing as I had a timing chain rather than a cam belt.

Anyway, 3 weeks after giving the Fabia to my brother and his family, the chain went and has written off the car :-(

Is this just one of those things or should something have been done that might have prevented it?

I'd be grateful for any responses as I'm not sure whether to mention it to my garage or not?

Many thanks, Claire.

Just one of those things unfortunately. Prior to the chain 'going' was it rattling a lot when started from cold? How many miles has the car done? Did it do mainly short journeys in your ownership?

Just out of interest how many miles had the car covered in 10 years?  You say it had just gone round the clock.

The engine is maybe written off but there is some value left in selling for breaking or repair.

New Cat, Tyres being of value. Someone may be happy to fit a replacement engine.

As Wino says, unless the chain was rattling loudly (in which case the garage advice that it didn't need changing was suspect) it's "one of those things".

Thank you, everyone. That's really helpful. It had only just reached the end of the clock & there was no rattling :-(

What 999999 miles? I'd expect quite a bit of rattling by then!

Nothing significant or new. It seemed to be driving really well.

Could you confirm was it 100,000 miles in 10 years or some other miles the car has covered?

It was just over 100000 (can't confirm exact figure as I no longer have the car!) It was about 10 years & 4 months old (06 plate). I bought it from a dealer after it had been a demonstrator, so it had very few miles at year 1. I used it for commuting to work mainly.
