Rough Road Package - Practicalities

Featured Replies

Okay so the car is raised by 15mm and there is a protective piece fitted to the underside of the body.

My questions are :

1)  While ride height is up by 15mm, does this actually mean the distance from the protective piece to the ground is 15mm more than the distance from a standard underbody to the ground, or as I suspect, the net difference somewhat less once you take into account the protective piece.

See, one of the reasons to want a higher riding car is I am sick of unreasonable speed bumps ( there are a few places where I live where the council have simply got it so wrong it is out of order ).

How much net extra clearance is there ? None ? Some ? How much ?

2) Is there a noise insulation benefit from having the rough road package ?

Cheers

Have a look at pages 222 & 223 of the manual although the information is confusing. It seems to say that it has a different angle of attack in relation to slopes but is not quoting a different ground clearance so you may be right - it wouldn't help over speed bumps.

Haven't seen any info on noise so guessing no difference.

It may, but it is an open question as to what extent. If it doesn't say in the manual, then it must be a pretty obscure thing to find out. It could always be measured with a ruler or tape measure, but I suppose that must be difficult to do in practice.

For me, rough road protection could be a benefit, but more so it is the ground clearance, if greater, that would be the chief benefit. Occasionally for high middle parts of farm tracks but more so , in cities where o.t.t. speed bumps can scrape a loaded car sometimes no matter how slow you're going. To simply know, that other things being equal ( speed, laden weight, tyre pressure ) you have a notional x amount of mm extra to clear the bump.

Old my old octavia with the underbody protection, the sills and various other bits were lower than all of the protection panels. So I should think it won't counteract the raised height.

If so that's good. To know you have an extra centimeter and a half at a speedbump, is a good thing.

Speedbumps should be smashed up and the bits shoved up the bums of councilors with a mallet.

But the whole point of the damn things is to slow you down. If you need the extra height to get over them at a certain speed then your tyres, wheels and suspension are still taking a beating.

It may be the point of them, but it does not take into account the height of certain vehicles that will ground regardless of speed. There are still too many instances of ramps exceeding the height mandated leading to claims against local authorities and claims by drivers on their own insurance to repair the damage!

Our 3-series BMW convertible is nothing special but is lower than other variants and we have to be very careful about short ramps but table ramps are fine.

Sodding bumps.... When I had my TVR I had to make almost a  mile detour whenever I went out and the same on the way back ...

I think the rough road package is meant more for countries with gravel roads. Not really much use for the UK and it'll make the car look stupid on stilts.

If the speed bumps are that bad get an SUV maybe Yeti or Kodiaq.

I would dearly love some speed bumps outside my house, would stop the chavs in their unpleasant little hatchbacks with cut springs and 6" exhausts from treating it like a race track.
