BMW 630 i

Featured Replies

260BHP @6600 RPM, and almost 300NM of low-end (2500RPM) torque...this thing absolutely flies! Lots of torque, pulls very well!

My old man took in my mother's X5 for servicing, and they gave him this for a courtesy car. It's white with a panoramic sun-roof, the same 18s the 645ci has and a nice red leather interior, WITH an M-badged 3-spoke steering wheel :) Twin pipes in the back...of which the downer is that they're a little smaller than the 645ci pipes, so it kinda looks 'weird'.

Later in the evening yesterday after work, I asked him if I could use the car for the evening...he won't let me touch his 645ci so I was surprised when he said ok! :D Then again, it ain't his car so it shouldn't have been much of a surprise to me, but I was happy I finally got to drive a 6-series.

It's a beautiful range, the 6-series. Manufactured in Germany, every detail looked at thoroughly and very well-built. I say this because the X5, as good as an SUV it is, starts 'creaking' inside over time...made in America :D The Germans though...they really do their stuff properly.

Anyway, as far as this 630i goes...

Performance:

Apply brake upon entry into the vehicle, and flick the ignition once, and it starts...a nice in-line 6 growl makes its presence, sounds pretty good...nothing like a V8 in idle though.

Very comfortable to drive it is indeed, great suspension system, and it's much smoother on the road than the 645ci..almost as good as a luxobarge. Gear shifts are super-smooth.

And now for how it moves...

I'm cruising nice and comfortable on the highway, admiring the interiors and whatnot.., and guess what comes up right behind me...a nice, black 645ci with blacked windows:orb_devil ...I know very well that a 645ci is a 645ci with 335bhp under the hood, but I also know that we are always allowed to play with others on the road just for fun...so I press the sports button and immediately the RPM needles goes up a notch...not sure what that means, but I believe it alters the gear ratios and it shifts much quicker than in 'comfort' mode...so anyways, press the sports button and flick to tiptronic and drop a gear...MAN! The engine starts bellowing and this thing just f***in' pulls away like a damned train from hell! LOTS of torque! It's 'only' 300Nm, which is the same as a standard vRS, but when you match it with 255 bhp, then you're talkin' a whole different story! ;) Change up in a micro-second and away we go again! Absolutely unbelievable, I did NOT expect the 630i to perform like this at all! It just pulls! Like nuts! Sure, tested the 0-100 time to give me only 6 seconds, but in gear, it's absolutely menacing! Must have surprised the 645ci as I pulled over 6 cars away from him...but then he floored it too and pulled up behind me in a matter of seconds...I did the only right thing and moved aside for him...:o Still though, we kept playing like that (overtake, move aside) until he had to pull off right...that was fun :)

A little later on, using the stopwatch in the system, I tested the 80km/h to 120km/h (50mph-75mph)...6.2 seconds in 5th gear, a little under 2 seconds in 3rd. And, just to test the top speed on a radar-less empty highway, I floored it to the max...250km/h. A modern 6-cylinder car 265bhp, 300Nm, performing absolutely outstandingly superbly...unbelievable...should be no surprise though when you find out it's almost fully made of light-weight magnesium...apparently it's the lightest 6 cylinder petrol engine in the world. The engine alone is only 120kgs!

That's one very fast car, and it constantly pulls through the gears without struggle. Very loud when you flor it too, it sounds great! It's louder than the 645ci weirdly enough...i.e., inside the cabin. Unbelievable. Like I said, I did not expect it to perform the way it did..almost like a werewolf in wolf's clothing kinda thing...you see a 630i on the road and you think 'bah...a 3.0 sixer...', I underestimated it big time.

Handling:

...pretty spot on, though there's a very tiny bit of roll, it's glued to the road ...great responsive steering, ..no matter how fast your goin' on a bend you don't feel like it will ever lose it. I guess it has a lot to do with the much lighter engine in the front, it would definitely outhandle the 645ci :)

I don't think there is anything I can say that sucks about this range of BMW...the only few things that bother me about it is in regards to the interior...no overhead handles, and the roofline is pretty low. My dad had his setting on (he's 5'11) pretty high, so when I got in my head was touching the roofline, and had to drop the seat pretty low, which I don't like, because then I don't get to see as much road. Also, something I've noticed about most Beemers nowadays, through the whole range is that the glove box lid always stops half way it's full flight down because the passengers legs are in the way, and I'm talkin' about tall passengers like most of us in here who would have the seat fully back.

Other than that, this car absolutely rocks. It's comfortable when you want it to be, and if you wanna scare someone, all you need to do is press the sports button, get into tiptronic and kick-down.

If I had a choice to make between the 645ci and this, I would most definitely pick this. It performs excellently, it feels and is much lighter and it handles superbly, it's quite a lot cheaper (almost 50,000dhs worth, the price of a new 2.0 Fabia here) and has pretty much the same options as the 645ci, less the chrome grille (black looks better on white anyway) and the badge in the rear. IMO, this is more a sports car than the big bro, which I've been in plenty of times to justify my statement :) Sure, it may not have 335bhp to take off as fast (5 seconds) at standing start, but on the road and handling-wise, it owns the 645ci.

I've asked my father to let me drive his car now ONLY to compare (been askin' forever)...he still won't let me, he's afraid I'll...wait for it... kill myself

This baby 6er really is one hell of an outstanding performer. Nothing you would ever expect :)

Lovely car. Nice writeup Mil :)

They did a good job with the 6 series.A nice coupe and complete contrast to the saggy waistlined 1 series that should have a Kia badge on it.

That engine in a 1 series must be even more fun then

Nice write up.

My brother in law has just got a 650 Sport, Have yet to get my hands on it.

Yeah, I overtook one of these yesterday on a bend!
