Couldn't agree more. And just another thing to add here, having sold a mk1 vrs and mk2 in the last year both serviced by myself, I've got the asking price for both cars and both sold within a week. People know a well cared for car stamps or not!!

An Oil & Filter change is not a Service even though main dealers seem to call it so.

Even changing filters and lubing locks and vacuuming and washing is not a Service.

An inspection and report and checking fluids and undercarriage and Brakes & Steering and tyres and wipers is getting to an Inspection Service though.

So as long as you are doing the lot you are starting to get to where they want around £300 for doing a Major Service.

The Wheels might never be off though and a Brake Fluid change will be 'extra'.

The average joe just doesn't see it like that though do they.

The average joe would not be buying my car if i decided to sell it as its got lots of modifications, also the value of early mk2 vrs,s is quite low now and most are around or over 100k so self servicing makes sence for me, i have done self servicing on my last 5 octavias and not had a problem selling them but again they were highly modified,

How can you say an oil and filter change is not a service its the most important part of a service,my best friend with pretty much the same car as me had a garage do a service and they put the wrong oil in his pd170 vrs (not low ash vw507 spec) and caused problems with his dpf until we worked out what the garage had done,

I dont need a piece of paper with some ticks in boxes to tell me some random person has aparently inspected my car,i know every inch of my car from doing all of my own work from changing all fluids and filters to inspecting and changing the discs and pads and changing a rear wheel bearing myself and changing track rod ends and changing the suspension ,i also got a fair bit of money off when i bought it due to checking it over properly and finding heavily worn tyres on the inside edges and worn out disks and pads .

TPS they are the official vag parts supplyer to your local Audi,Vw,Seat,Skoda garages so if you go to the main dealer and order parts this is where they get them from and add on there bit of profit as well, i used quantum longlife 3 oil the proper stuff for the pd170 equiped with dpf , they will serve anyone from there counter and always give me a parts club discount even though i dont ask for one,

Trade Parts Specialists.

An oil & filter service is exactly that.  A Lube change.

Yes important for the engine obviously.  As to Servicing and Maintenance it is the partial maintenance of an engine,

the rest of the car also needs it for your and others safety.

So if you do all the other checks and maintenance that is good.

Very good.

Not all can do, and as to £42 or those that can not go to TPS,

Asda do the Correct Spec of VW Oil for £24 & any Motor Factor does the Oil Filter & Sump Plug,

Actually comes in costing less than £42.

PMSL.

Thats the issue in the UK, the idiots that do not service or maintain cars, even check tyres or oil or anything,

but wait for 12 months for someone to tell them a car is unsafe.

No longer is there a MOT Certificate issued telling people on the rear that the Minimum Standard was passed on the day of the test being done.

Your Insurance requires the vehicle to be to a standard to pass a MOT for all the 364 days or so in between MOT's.

The UK Government in their wisdom were going to have a cars first MOT coming at 4 years.

Not sure if that is now shelved.

Some people havnt got the equipment to service their own car. Some find it easier just to put the car in a garage. That's fair enough i respect that. It just annoys me when people say the car will be worth more with a full service history or it'll be easier to sell etc etc. I've went to dealers to trade cars in with full service stamps and they still make insulting offers for the car. It's the biggest con in motoring in my opinion and just goes to prove if you say something enough people fall for it.
