Fixes for Rattles

Featured Replies

After a lot of investigation, I think I’ve eliminated an incredibly annoying but intermittent tapping noise from the boot of my estate.  The culprit was the load cover – the rigid section with the handle flaps around when shaken about by the car on bumpy roads, this causes the fabric covering around the crossbar to tense and release slapping on the metal bar as it does so, the slight sound from this is focused by the tailgate glass so it seems much louder to anyone sat in the front.  It was easily fixed by bending the rigid section upwards slightly so the fabric is always under tension underneath the crossbar.

Sagalout had a similar noise but a different solution:

I also found that the rear seats’ side cushions (the ones attached to the side of the car) were rattling about resulting in a clunking noise when rear passengers moved at all.  This seems to have been poor assembly – with the rear seats dropped I was able to get a hand underneath the cushion and partially release its upper fastening (a plastic plug on the cushion slides into a keyhole shaped slot in the side of the car) by lifting upwards and forwards.  When refitted by pushing directly on the plug downwards and backwards with a hand from above, the cushion latched properly in to place; I guess I did a better job than the factory.

Hope this helps anyone with similar issues.  Please add any more fixes you’ve found.

A few years ago I owned a previous gen Seat Leon. It had various rattles in the rear that annoyed me like mad, but I managed to solve them easily. SO tried similar but quicker resolves with my Superb.

One being the rear creaking/rattling doors. Previously I adjusted the door catches on the door to make it a tighter shut. With the Superb I put a small wrap of duck tape round where the lock hits the catch, one rattle solved.

Second being seat backs. Same method, wrapped a small slither round where the catch hits the catch on the seat back. Basically making the catch softened and tighter.

Hope this may help someone on here.

I'll keep an eye open for you round town :-)

A different rattle/creak:

The side air vents on the dash creak and rattle when cold. I have installed anti rattle tape between the side edges of the vents and the dash itself, this has reduced the racket by around 90%. The vents still creak a little, but it's more to do with the chrome strips and the surrounding plastic now.

I might try some PTFE spray and see if that sorts it.

The vents simply pull out of the dash by prying the sides out gently. Be careful as there is a cable for the vent's LED lighting.

Also check your doors have play or not, from chassis moving / twisting of frame top rubber with felt piece rub against the inner part of door frame and make creaking noise.

I use a cloth tape all around the inside of door frame where this felt piece rests and no more creaking.

i have the station with variable boot floor and the top cover also makes noise flapping if no weight on it and you go over some bumps fast.

I actually keep a roll of anti rattle tape in the boot cubby. Sucks on a car that's the thick end of £40k  :dull:

I had a similar creaking round all the front vents on my Passat. Discovered by accident whilst giving it a general inside clean that a blast of Pledge sorted it out. I imagine the effects will soon wear off, so I may look at some of this PTFE spray you mention (I don't fancy pulling the vents out).

It's strange how these rattles take time to manifest themselves. I wonder if there's some sort of release agent (from the manufacturing process) or similar on the plastic that eventually wears off, causing the part to start rattling/squeaking/creaking/buzzing etc.

I think you may be right. I hate squeaks and rattles and was very careful when I test drove my car to make sure it didn't have any. A few months down the line after purchase and they start to pop up.

I did a similar fix to Agplant100 on my previous Superb II - in my case wrapping a bit of electrical insulation tape around the door catches. This instantly cured a metallic rattle that two trips to the dealer failed to sort (they adjusted the door catches, removed and refitted the door trim cards and adjusted the boot latch, all to no avail). I also suggested the same fix to my hairdresser who had taken his VW Touran to a dealer to fix a similar rattle. the dealer couldn't fix the rattle, the electrical tape sorted it!
