Red Coolant Light Flashing on startup?

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Just wondering if the car is in need of a top up or a coolant refresh as the past week on cold start up the red coolant light flashes and sounds on the dash. Is the coolant likely to be low or should I just refresh it all with winter around the corner?

I'd be blaming a build up of crud on yer prongs. Give em a scrape with a screwdriver.

Ummm....prongs???

Ummm....prongs???

The sensor inside the expansion bottle, it has two metal prongs. Take the cap off and you can see them.

?

Did you pop the bonnet and look at the reservoir bottle and particularly at the MIN marker and see where the red coolant level is.

Then has the car had servicing, how many miles has it covered, has the fluid level ever been checked. or topped up or the strength of the fluid checked?

Its Service & maintenance really and getting a car ready for winter.

Do not overfill with the correct coolant and if you think there is a leak have that checked out.

Mine started to do this on the first start up of the day after a cold-ish night,i gave the prongs inside the coolant bottle a scrape with a screwdriver (they looked fine to me but did it anyway) & i added a touch more coolant & it didnt do it again over the next few days,if that doesnt sort it then you will need to replace the sensor which i think is part of the coolant reservoir.

Coolant level is fine and the prongs look fine but as some of you have suggested I'll given them a scrape. I've ordered a new coolant temp sensor anyway for the sake of £5, Cheers chaps.
