I've never revved any of my diesels more than 3 k  you don't need to , max torque is only 1750

Agreed, if your number one requirement is maximising energy efficiency.

However if you want to do everything you can to maximise component longevity (EGR, DPF, turbo and engine etc.) then revving beyond 3,000 rpm once in a while will help to reduce the build up of carbon deposits and sludge that can plague under-worked diesels, new or old.

i always leave my car in gear , living in Wales you'd be a fool to trust a little cable or wire with your whole car on some of the hills we have

Got a  DSG so have to leave it in 'park' to get the key out of the ignition, but when I've had, or drive a manual, I always leave it in gear; leave in first gear when facing uphill and reverse gear when facing downhill, loads of hills here in Sheffield so its good practice.

Have you driven DSG? You need to depress brake to start it :)

Got a DSG and don't need to press the brake to start it; have to press the brake to put it in drive or reverse though. Its on a 09 plate, is having to press the brake an arrangement on a later model?

You can't start latest DSG without depressing brake pedal.

Unless you've got one of the 1.4 TSIs with the dodgy timing belt tensioners that allow it to jump teeth if the engine is pushed the wrong way by the wheels while parked in gear, in which case use 1st pointed downhill and reverse pointed uphill. If you want to maximise your engine braking selecting reverse at all times is the way to go as this is a lower gear than 1st on any Skoda gearbox I've looked at the ratios on. I usually leave it in the gear that moves me the correct way to get out of where I'm parked unless it's a steep hill, where I turn the front wheels so they'll hit the kerb if the car moves and use reverse.

These things are all features probably  required for the euro NCAP
