My 2004 Superb I 1.9TDI comes up with a beep and Airbag Fault message in the central display plus the airbag engine warning light on startup. So far I have not tried anything apart from wiggling the connectors under my seat. Will VCDS point me to the failing component?

Vcds will identify the cause. Also the light won't go out until the fault is cleared with vcds.
