Over clocking ....how?

Featured Replies

I have got an old amd 700 pc sat here doing some folding (slowly) and was wondering how do you overclock it and by how much can you get away with

For reliability, around 10%. I'd be interested in seeing how I can push my two AMD machines further (a bit) too.

How do you actually overclock it is it done in the bios or something

I believe so - something to do with multipliers in the chipset features. But I'm waiting for someone else to come on here with some better advice. ;)

You can overclock a lot of the machine including the bus which will make it all faster but I can't find out how to do it

Ability to overclock a PC depends on a lot of items, but mainly the requirements are :

  • A Motherboard with a bios that allows overclocking
  • Sufficient power available from PSU - as you may need to increase voltages
  • Suitable cooling of the case & cpu - overclocking increases temps
  • An understanding that if you go to far - you will destroy the CPU(rare)

Overclocking is done in the bios - usually accessed by hitting the DEL key during startup.

A combination of settings can be changed to acheive an overclock - a simple one is to just increase the FSB setting - normally at 200 - change this in small increments to get a small improvement.

More advanced ways include lowering the CPU multiplier to allow a much increased FSB -- but this will require more voltage to the CPU and memory and is more risky - and is dependant on the motherboard allowing it and the CPU being multiplier unlocked(not all are)

Having said all that - if it's a spare PC that your not really using for anything else it's probably the best candidate to learn on.

The key thing is change 1 item by a small step - then run the PC - folding is ideal as it will load the PC up very quickly - if after a few hours the PC is still stable try another, but always record what settings you have changed - that way you can return them to standard if it doesnt work

Would you believe it my bios she say NO :(

Not something I would consider unless you're prepared to loose you pc by frying the m/b or processor by forcing it too far.

Also consider the extra heat overclocking generates.

Just Google for "overclocking" will bring up loads of sites saying how to do it.

Whats "Google" then?

Search engine for the net

On some AMD chips you need to put a little bit of silver to connect two wires that you can se eonthe top of the chip (google to find out which ones).

This line locks the multiplier so you can't do any of that without it connected.

Failing that you can slowly (eg in 1Mhz or 5Mhz steps) increase the FSB until it all goes crazy then back off a bit. This however can mess up graphics cards etc as AGP and PCI don't like running at odd speeds a lot of the time.
