Steering is suddenly heavy, especially when braking!

Featured Replies

Two days ago whilst pulling in to a parking bay, i noticed the steering go really heavy and kind of judder! I was a bit 'shocked', but you know, passed it off, lol

This is my wife car, so asked her if she'd felt anything, a dumb look came my way...

Anyway, i've driven it a few more times now (whilst my T4 is off the road) and noticed this happen on different occasions...

When changing direction, there's a real resistance to the steering.

When braking it nearly becomes impossible to steer! Almost crashed this morning, as i braked, went to steer and pretty much couldn't!

When you pull up, if your'e turning and braking, you feel a judder (kind of like ABS), and it's really heavy to turn.

There's no problem with the steering centring...

I thought maybe the fluid was low, not checked it since we bought the car, 6 months ago! Couldn't see a reservoir in the bay....

Ideas and thought welcome.

Steering fluid low ? Brake fluid low ? Faulty pump or a leak in the system ? Belt tight ? All things to check

Check battery voltage before and after starting engine.

As Wino says, possibly battery voltage. The reservoir is sat under the battery, which you have to remove for access. I had a similar problem of heavy steering when turning through a down hill left hand bend, but this was down to low PS fluid level.

Cheers All.

I'll have a ganders tomorrow.

Don't stop the suggestions though, if anyone else has any other thoughts.
