After moving from my Alfa 156 to my Octavia I've always missed having an armrest. I know there is one available for the mk4 Golf; would it easily fit my Octavia? Or is there an alternative which would work?

Check the fleabay - there is retrofit ones available, many people have fitted them

Golf mk4 armrest goes straight in. You'll need a different metal 'foot' from the dealer which will set you back about a tenner and then Octavia spec trim at the base as this is shorter than on the golf (or just cut your existing trim). With the right parts it's a really quick job.

Imho don't bother with the eBay specials, most are flimsy as hell.
