Hi All

I have a 2010 Octavia vRS and I realise it uses oil and you have to keep it topped up fairly regularly. I have searched these forums for recommended oils to use and I have downloaded a document listing said oils. However, I am still unsure which is which. Can anyone help and suggest a decent couple of options for my car?  :notme:

Petrol or diesel

Hi Petrol

I believe the advice is to use something slightly thicker like Quantum Platinum oil which is a 5w/40 fully synthetic to 502.00/505.01. Being a little more viscous reduces the oil useage a little. Its cheap as chips even from dealers its reasonable. Being 502.00 you need the fixed oil change interval regime, but most will advise oil changes even more often than the 10k/1year interval, because of the fragility of the camchain setup. Personally I would recommend no longer than 8000 miles/9 months.

Oils is oils. No, they're not really!! And it can be a bit of a minefield if you don't know or haven't researched it.

If you're topping up, ideally you would match up what is in there, assuming it is to either VW 502.00 or 504.00 spec. If it isn't - you'd want to change the lot pronto. If suspicious of what is in there - change the lot....

Oil brands come down a lot to personal preference and user likes.  First decision is whether your are running the long life regime. If so, you will need vw 504.00 for your petrol. Choices are numerous, but make sure you get an approve VW 504.00 oil.  Quantum Long Life 3 is one of the cheaper options, I've used it and it is fine. Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 another (also used that), Castrol Edge 5W30. .....The list goes on.

I personally wouldn't recommend the long service interval regime. When I've used Long Life oils in the past I've always changed at 10k Max and it makes them a bit unnecessary. If changing on a fixed 12mth / 10k, you can use a VW 502.00 oil.   These are often a little cheaper as they don't have to sustain the incredibly long change interval and some additives are not required. Quantum Platinum is a cost efficient option here. Edit: Mobil Super 3000 X1 another option. They are both 5W40, so can be a little better for engines that like a drink.vRS TSI also run pretty hot which thins the oil out further.

My 2011 vRS TSI hasn't really used any oil the 6,000 miles I've had it and I am presently using Quantum Platimum VW502.00.  There are lots of other options though - Opie Oils is a good online shop to look at options, very cost competitive and I think a site sponsor.
