Engine warning light

Featured Replies

Just had a weird moment when driving, I put my foot down in my vrs and it seemed to judder abit through the gears; it had been doing it a little bit all day really, but that felt the worst. Then an engine light came on flashing for like 30 seconds then went off.

Looked it up its apparently an emissions warning light and is generally just a sensor.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this ?

I'm probably going to go get a diagnostics run on it just to find out what it is.

I had a new set of denso iridium plugs in on Friday whether that could be the issue as it's the only thing that's changed about the car.

Cheers,

Big Dan

Many have the same and no it is usually not just the sensor.

Normally it is the Pipes not back on properly and sealed. the 'O' rings, but it can be other things.

So who put the plugs in, which DENSO, did they check the gap, & what was the gap?

Are all the pipes fitted properly, no holes now, Turbo Pipe, and small rubber pipe OK?

See post #43.

This is common, even when done at main dealers.

PS

If you have an oil user and have changed the oil to 0w 30, there might already be oil fouling a plug and causing a misfire, hopefully not,

but mis-fires might not log anyway.

Drive with care until you diagnose the problem and check the fitment of the spark plugs and the ignition coils.

Do not boot the car until you know whats up.

ie No full bore acceleration with Super Charger & Turbo, just light throttle, you might get a EPC Light as well as the EML,

be careful to reduce misfires until you find the problem it might go into Limp Mode and shut down 2 cylinders, possibly just disable the turbo though.

As a safety measure to protect the engine.

I took it into a local garage , I dunno if they checked the gaps I did mention it but they just said " leave it we is "

I was going to do it myself but I've not had much time with being at work.

What do you think I should do, go back to garage and ask them

To sort it ?

That is the usual thing to do.

They often say they do these engines all the time.  When you ask if they do Twinchargers many are more vague.

The plugs come pre-set and thats fine, but then the fitter should know what they checked to see that the setting was correct.

Then hopefully the plug does not get knocked while fitting.

Anyway, you need to check or have checked that the pipes are sealed.

Thats the common thing.

If all is well with that, do not trust to anyone with no Twincharger experience.

I might just take it too the skoda dealership near me get them

To

Have a look at it and get them to sort the pipes out, because I can imagine this garage being funny if I went and said they hadn't done it right.

If they are not wanting £85 just for doing the diagnosis then that is what you need to do.

Maybe even if they do want £85.

Can you not just ask nicely at the garage that did the plugs if they can look again.

Or can you check yourself?

Christ is that how much they charge for diagnostics ?

Yeah il have a look myself first I think

And then maybe have a word we the garage, failing that il take it to skoda

plus the VAT - they are not called Stealers for no reason.

Have you got a reputable VAG specialist not too far away?

I am lucky having one very local with a rate of £50 + VAT an hour, still not cheap but around half of the dealer rate. The technician who does the job has an interest in the customer too since the business depends on their reputation. At the stealer there is often no connection while potentially pressure to complete the job in the booked time since that will be the price charged and to complete the scheduled workload each day.

Ultimately they got the work but twice did a diagnostic check without charge. The first just laptop taking 5 minutes, the second a bit longer to check for any wiring faults before booking in to change parts.

@Dan just got mine back from Skoda and seen this post.

They forgot to put my Denso's in as they were still in the glove box!

Anyway i have measure the gap on each using metal Feeler gauge & they are not all EQUAL

3 x 0.7mm

1 x 0.75mm

Im going to my local garage to get this done soon, but what should the gap actually be? I presume 0.7mm based on the spread of the results

ALSO, why dont you put your original plugs back in & see if it the new denso plugs causing problem?

What was the condition of the ones you took out?

Mine is running a bit lumpy but it is cold. Ive no error messages after the squirter / breather fixes but the engine does sound different.

I also think they have topped me up with 95 ron instead of super!

Manager told me not to floor it for 200 miles which is exactly the same range i have got.

0.7mm is fine.

They used to be 0.8mm, as were the OEM plugs then VW / Skoda changed that to 0.7mm.

(Bluespark Tuning box guys recommended 0.6 mm with there Box fitted.)

Best get those new plugs in if you have no idea of the condition of the old ones.

Unbelievable really that any place would fit new Breathers and do a Software Update and not at least check the Spark Plugs condition and since they are out change them.

Especially when there were new plugs supplied.

PS

If new Spark Plugs are fitted correctly with the correct gap and there are issues,

the first check is the PIpes / O rings, and the coils and the installation.

The reason for saying the pipes are a common issue is because over the past 6 years of the Spark Plugs being changed it has been a common issue.

(Even some places changing only 3 plugs and giving the one that needs the pipes moved a a miss has been known to happen.)

When i picked my car up on friday evening after oil change and denso plugs fitted everything seemed fine if not better, even the idle was smoother.wasnt until yesterday that i noticed an issue. Not sure on the gap sizes as i didnt check them myself the garge said theyd see to it. They aslo said the old plugs were in need of changing allthough they didnt give much in way of details of the condition of them.

OEM plugs have been changed once at Service end of August 2016 & a day later i  started consumption test 1000km (621 miles).

Ive actually done 1050 miles on the August OEM plugs. They should not be fouled, but i am desperate to see them.

Best leave them alone if just changed.

They usually foul with short trips and getting a bit sooty, then a bit oily.

Long runs and up to heat usually has them hot and clean.

?

So was there a Software Update done and are you now running the latest available Update from Skoda (VW) ?

The manager said the ECU would be updated (this was on the friday) but i have no way of proving it.

They had the car the full week.

Maybe only way to know is if i get a Dyno run soon they can see when file was last overwritten maybe?

Theres no mention of ECU on job paperwork and neither was the Denso's, & they forgot to do that.
