1.2 TSI 105PS Engine Noises

Featured Replies

Hi all

Been hearing a few odd noises from under the hood lately, i think since its got colder which i guess is to be expected really.

I've got a few I'd like to get identified, im pretty sure its normal.

Attached an mp3 of one, this one comes and goes. Its normally a cyclic swooshing noise but its pretty loud in the cabin at times. I lifted the hood and it wasn't so loud compared to the rest of the engine ticking over.

Engine was hot but im sure I've heard it from cold before. I've EQ'd it a bit to bring the noise out more so its obvious.

More to come when i can record them...

Have you tried turning off the aircon and see if the noise carries on? Mine can make a strange noise coming into the cabin now and then, but stops if you turn the aircon off.

Hi,

Next time i hear it I'll give that a go. Didn't think to start turning things off at the time.

It just seemed really loud in the cabin on some occasions and i wondered what it was.

Sometimes get a higher pitched loud whine as well.

I'm more concerned about the loudish knocking i get in the cabin when cold starting / under load. It was 7 degs C here this morning, i could hear it for a while but not as bad when its been 0 or 2 degs C last week. Someone has mentioned its normal but i can't find any other reference to that having searched a bit looking at the 1.2 TSI across the VAG range.

I find it hard to believe a modern engine would suffer these type of expansion things but maybe im a bit old school on how things are these days.

As expected seems to quieten down when up to temperature.

In general it has a sort of hollow 3 cylinder engine note about it, guess that's normal for these?

Im going to get the oil changed as im not certain if long life oil was used on the last service a year ago. I've been told the car will tell me when its next oil change is required, having checked it says another 9K, its done that already this year... Sticker on the door pillar says due Dec 2016. Sounds like they've changed it to variable servicing with standard VW502.00 oil in it....

The extended service box is ticked 'no' in the oil change bit of the history last year.

Maybe i should of started another thread, but im sure there's many already..

Cheers

Ok, here's the knocking noise i get from cold. Its not that loud on the recording so might be a bit hard to make out and it was around 12 deg C out there this morning so not as pronounced as i have heard it at lower temperatures.

Its more noticeable as the engine is put under load, say engaging the clutch. Its the low muffled knocking noise on top of the other engine noise you can hear. More noticeable from half way through.

Right, this is as good as i can capture what im hearing at the moment.

I've looped a section in one of the mp3's where its most obvious the other is the whole short section.

Its the lower frequency dull knocking thing on top of the normal engine noise, happens more when putting the engine under load ie, engaging clutch on bite point before pulling away.

Also does it when in neutral with light revving.

Its gets somewhat quieter as it gets warmed up but always there in the background.

Maybe its normal for these but I've never had a engine make this sort of noise before and have nothing to compare against.

Its going in next Tuesday to get it checked out and im getting the oil changed along with brake fluid as its due to be done.

Cheers

Does the car run well?

If you are concerned you had best go and seek the advice of a motor mechanic or technician.

If you are not sure what oil has been used in the engine you are as well to get an Oil & Filter service done with an oil of your choice.

VW 502 00 (5w 40) if you are having fixed servicing / oil changes annually / under 10,000 miles.

Hi

Seems to be running ok, sometimes falters a bit under harder accelerarion but just put that down to catching the turbo wrong maybe.

So do you think it's sounds not normal for one of these? I've got nothing to compare it to. It sounds like a traction engine in the morning when it's cold ;)

It's booked in next Tuesday to get it checked out where I brought it a few months back, it still has a couple of weeks manufacturer warranty so keen to get it back to them. It was a used Skoda approved thing.

If they think the knocking noise is normal?! then I said to change the oil and brake fluid as due. It's done about 10K miles on the oil in there, not sure what's in there now. They've put it on a variable regime but I'm going back to yearly. Car says service due in another 9K miles! I don't think so....

My wife's 1.2 TSi DSG sounds fantastic and has very smooth engine tickover. My 2014 1.4 VRs rattles from cold and does not sound as sweet as the 1.2. It's got 14k miles, the last three I did since buying it in August. It's not using oil and apart from the noise at tickover and light acceleration is a great car to drive. I just wish it had the great roar under acceleration that the wife's 1.2 has.

I guess no knocking noises with your 1.2 then when its cold?

Mines makes a nice little growl when you boot it in 3rd, i didn't expect that so put a smile on my face.

I came from a 1.8T petrol Bora sport, that didn't miss a beat in the 7 years i owned that.

Actually prefer the Fabia to be honest, it flies along and keeps up with traffic fine. Found it good on a longer run as well.

Just hope its mechanically sound....

Well, just a little update.

Had the car serviced last Tuesday, they kept it over night to try starting first thing when cold Wed morning.

Said they couldn't hear it, though the tech said it sounded like it was the flywheel going by the recordings I gave them.

We started the car again when I got there, he lifted the clutch on the biting point and nock nock nock nock.

I said 'that's it, what is that?'

Oh,he said. Sounds like the flywheel working. Didn't really flag it up as an issue.

So I'm told £1400 to replace if not covered, £200 if covered under warranty have to cover cost of clutch plate....

Going to see if it gets worse over time, not worth ripping it all apart at the moment.

Had the car 3 months.

Can these be changed to a single mass flywheel?

Cheers
