Octavia VRS MOT time

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had my pre MOT check done and its mainly a bit of suspension that needs doing, plus the exhaust.

Droplink and D-bushes? Is the drop link the Anti Roll bar? Never heard of a D-Bush before either.

The exhaust is blowing and the back box needs replacing. I'm wondering if it maybe an excuse to upgrade a bit.

Will this be OK for replacing the centre section? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Octavia-1-8-20v-Turbo-Hoffman-Performance-Exhaust-Race-Tube-/271139173893?hash=item3f21277605:m:m1tFVRW2jEIL4RU9PGA8oZQ

Also the back box on my Octavia doesn't seem like one that can be replaced with a universal boack box, the tailpipe is really long on it. Am I right in thinking I would need to buy one specific to the car?

The drop link is the one that goes from the shocker to the anti roll bar & the D bush is the one that goes around the anti roll bar and holds it to the chassis. As for the back box, you could use a universal one, but would need to cut the forward section of pipe off your old one to be able to mount it. Is there a join in the system between the middle and rear section? If not, then that would indicate it is the original exhaust from the factory, so would need careful cutting.

There are a few about being broken at the moment, on FB spares page, and on ebay, so may be worth a trawl to see if you can get a decent 2nd hand system (especially if you are on a tight budget)

Drop links are the links between the suspension and anti-roll bar. Make sure you get the long ones as I think most of the other Octavia ones use the short ones. Beware of cheap droplinks - they don't last.

D bush is probably the anti-roll bar bushes. Remove the plastic sleeves from the ARB and fit over-sized bushes (the plastic sleeves commonly crack). I think 17mm bushes are required with the sleeves, or 19mm without them. Do a search on the forum to confirm that though!

Where is the exhaust blowing from? Might be repairable either by fixing the join or welding.

The original mid-section has a silencer but I have heard that people on here have fitted un-silenced mid-sections from the TDI models.

The rear box is more tricky. From what I understand there is no pattern part and a new one from a dealer is very expensive. I would either look for a second hand exhaust, a custom stainless one or another 1.8T backbox with your original exhaust tip welded on.

Edit: Bush sizes above must be wrong. It's either 19mm with the sleeves and 17mm without or 21mm with and 19mm without. The bushes listed on ECP are 21mm (which would be with the sleeves) but their parts listings have been known to be wrong sometimes...

EuroFlo do list a rear box, part number EXSK6028

Screen grab from their web cat

Thanks guys, Ive checked out Euroflo but cant seem to get a quote on the back box.

I'm thinking universal may work out cheaper but although I wouldn't mind it being a bit louder I don't want it really noisy.

What are good brands for the drop-link and any I should avoid?

Will the straight through pipe be no good?

TRW or Lemforder for the drop links. Same with the ARB bushes, good ones are cheap enough so no point fitting the cheapest parts and having to replace them again. Need to double check what size you need though as standard VRS ones will be too big if you remove the plastic sleeve/collar on the ARB. Poly pushes on the ARB are also an option. I edited my post above to try and clarify the bush sizing.

Not sure on the straight through mid-pipe - it will make the car louder but I don't know by how much. Did you search? I'm sure there are people on here that have done it. Alternatively some of the mk4 Golf crowd most certainly will have.

If you can't get hold of the back box mentioned above then you're back to the other 3 options I suggested.
