Starting issues after fitting new alternator

Featured Replies

Hi all, was wondering if anyone could help me, ive just had to replace my alternator and the car ran for a few mins before i turned it back off, now the car wont start at all. When turning the engine over it sounds like there is no compression but im not sure what to listen for as its always cranked on the first turn of the key. Thanks in advance

What makes you think "it sounds like no compression" - is it turning over faster. Have you checked that the alternator drive belt is still in position - just wondering if it has come off and gone somewhere it shouldn't.

Can you give a simple overview of how you change the alternator - what did you undo/remove as generally I think that you just put a spanner on the belt tensioner to rotate it while you slip the belt off, then remove the wiring and fixing bolts. This info may help people identify any possible problems.

I removed the intercooler pipe to give better access to the two bolts on the alternator other than the formentioned cables and belt, we started the car after and everything seemed ok,after a couple of hours i went to go out and nothing, it went to fire but stopped almost instantly then turned over with very little resistance, plugged an obd reader in but showed no faults

Has the intercooler pipe come off, the connections are not very good and wear after a few years.
