Help... Oil questions

Featured Replies

My oil is low again (8k miles) will be the second top up is that normal?

Can anyone confirm the correct oil to top up with I really don't want to get it wrong. It's a petrol vRS

Is Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 C3 the correct before I put in?

Could really do with a second opinion before I **** it up

It's 5w 30 but should be Edge in the Castrol range, not magnatec. Should conform to Vw 504/507 spec.

Don't know for your engine, but if you love high revs, best would be not to top up, but to have a 3/4 level.

P.S.: Castrol has an Edge LL which complies to 507 specs

So no good then?

Magnatec is a semi synthetic oil, edge is fully synthetic that complies to 507. If you did use it it would not do any harm if it were used just to top up, especially if you get you oil chaingd at 9k or every year, whatever comes sooner.

It says fully synthetic on the label?

Read the back of the label on the oil. If your 'PETROL' VRS is on long life service intervals it is VW 504.00 spec / fixed intervals VW 502.00 spec.

VW 507.00 spec is for Diesel engines.

Whilst Magnatec C3 is fully synthetic, and meets the fixed interval requirements, the Egde oil is for long life.

1 litre of top up oil is £7 ish from TPS (Trade Parts Specialist) for Quantum brand or a little more for Castrol Edge. The colour and the shapes of the bottles are spookily similar - I'll let you decide who makes it!

In terms of consumption, new engines burn more, but if you let the oil level run low, it gets hotter and therefore you use more.

Top to Bottom marks on dipstick is circa 1 litre - fill to just below top marker.

P.196-197 of the owners manual gives you the info that you require.

If you don't know what your doing take it to a garage.

Along as the magnatec conforms to VW 504 or 507 nothing wrong for top up.

NikEd are you annual service (504) or variable (507)?

Thanks for the help. Went and bought some Castrol Edge and topped up...

According to the manual 502 is annual and 504 is variable (which I'm on) 507 is for diesels as far as I can tell?

Correct...

Glad you got sorted. If you find yourself topping up often, get some Quantum 5w 30 Longlife oil, it's usually between £20-25 for 5 litres and meets the VAG 504/507 spec. Keep the small Castrol Edge bottle and top it back up from the big Quantum bottle. My MK2 tsi used loads of oil and I used to do this. 1 litre Castrol Edge top up bottles are usually between £10-15!

I did not realise it was a semi synth, i used it for years on my clio the 10w40 is a semi synth but not the 5w40. You learn somthing new everyday. Even more sutable to use.

Costco often have Castrol oils on offer, worth keeping an eye out for them if you're a Costco member.

504 and 507 spec are the same oil, for petrol and diesel. I use in my vRS tdi and my son in his golf gti. Also take Quantum 5L to the dealers when I have services and they are okay as know they cannot match price...
