Hey Everyone,

In early Spring I shall be heading up to the Orkneys to pick up my Ford Capri which is currently being restored. My wife wants to turn it into a holiday by spending some time in the lake district for a few days on the way down and I was hoping to have a bit of a driving tour on the way .

Does anyone have any recommended routes? We were hoping to maybe spend 2 or 2 1/2 days travelling down. Getting the ferry across in the evening to Thurso and finding somewhere nearby to stay overnight, then start the trip in the morning. Integrating the western leg of the north coast 500 looks good, but not sure if that will extend the journey too far to make it in our time frame. Happy to drive 4-5 hours a day with a small break to see a view or attraction. I was thinking maybe Thurso (ish) to around Ullapool and then Ullapool to Fort William, then Fort William to the lakes? But I would be unsure which roads to take or best routes etc.

Your views, recommendations.....and directions are much appreciated .

This is a pretty good route, it is all going to be weather dependent because Spring Time is when plans might need changing.

But if roads are open, and they usually are ASAP then the world, or west coast is your oyster.

 

It would be a shame to be so close and not go here in the Capri.

The Lake District is there for another time.

Going down is a good plan, so Torridon & Shieldaig & then this.

 

The A9 is nice down to Inverness, then the A82 to the Erskine Bridge, then A-M898, M8 onto the M74 and the M74/A74(M) is probably Britain's most scenic motorway. OK, this is also one of the shortest routes but the only "unscenic parts" IMO are called Inverness and Glasgow.
