1.4 TDI 80 2007 - heater playing up

Can anyone advise? I have to have the hot/cold dial turned to max (hot) before hot air is pumped into the footwells/dashboard demist vent. Until recently warm air would be pumped in generously at the halfway point (dial turned midway at the 12 O'Clock position). Now only cold air is pumped in at this point. All very odd.

Any thoughts?

PS: should add that the car has air con but not climate control.
