CV Joints clicking - 150 tdi manual

Featured Replies

Noticed earlier today while turning on near full lock out of a tight turn (with window down) i could hear the front right drive shaft / CV joint clicking away. ?

Anyone else heard this ?   I have been a RWD cars for some years, so it could be common but i recall clicking CV joints where when the joints were worn and dry.

Thanks

Definitely not normal. Have a quick look in the wheel arch in case the wheel/suspension is catching on something as it might save you a trip to the dealer.

Its CV joint noise for sure..

Rick,

I've the same on my manual TDI 150 Estate too.

Took it to my local dealer (I wouldn't normally use them) and the mechanic said it was because the CV boots are plastic and not rubber.

I'll be taking it to a different dealer instead for them to assess it properly.

Mine did it. Take it to the dealer, they just lubed mine with silicone grease. Quiet now

There is an issue of clicking noises caused by dry mating surfaces between the CV joint and hub.

Some special lubricant is required to resolve said issue.

Thanks all.. will book it in after Christmas, as i can see if i book it in now it will be a week or so away and knowing my luck i will end up with a Citigo over Christmas  !

Maybe not 100% related but.....

Just had the Passenger side CV boot split on my Octavia 1.2 TSi. Its only 14 months old, 7000 miles. Tell tale sign was grease all over the wheel and arch.

Being changed under warranty.

Is this a common problem James?

Never had CV boot problems, only on old bangers where they had perished and split...

I had a both of CV boots done on the Octy II I used to own, but that was after 5 years and probably 70 000 miles. The boots failing may be a side effect of the tighter turning circles Skodas have compared to a lot of other manufacturers, but at that low a mileage that's definitely not right.

I've only replaced 1 split boot on an O3

Ok, so not widespread.

Must just have a dodgy boot on that side.

James,

Should all dealers be aware of this?

If they keep up to date with the technical information available to them they should.

Mine started making a clicking noise whilst turning the wheels at slow speeds. I raised it with my dealer and they identified an issue where the wheel bearings need repacking with grease, this has made the clicking go away.

I never found out what the actual cause of the clicking was (came out of the factory with insufficient grease around the CVs and bearings maybe?). Either way, I wonder if this has reduced the lifespan of the CV joints. Only time will tell......

FTR, mine was made in February 2016. Maybe there are a batch of cars that are affected.

Mine was built on the 12/02/2016

I need to do some more testing to replicate it each time.

I replicated it by using standard CV joint tests: Reversing on full lock, and going lock to lock on the steering. I also found it was more noticeable after a long drive, once everything had heated up. I also found it became more frequent as the miles increased.

Oh, and I lied about the manufacturing date. Just checked my Skoda app and it was built on 28/01/2016, so there's 2 weeks between our cars.

Not sure on manufacturing date, but I collected my Superb the second week in April.

I've got about 14k on the clock now and it's getting worse. I best get it booked in

Just tried booking it in with my supplying dealer who said

"we aren't taking any diagnostics in at the moment until at least Tuesday next week. We are only dealing with breakdowns at the moment so call Skoda Assist and they'll recover it to us"

Frustrating. I'd be using recovery resource that could be used for a proper breakdown.

I'll try my local dealer who fobbed me off last time again instead.

Thank you.. I have a steep switch back right hander I pull out which requires full right lock and normally put the window down when pulling out of the junction to listen as its a bit of a blind turn. It was then I noticed it a couple of times when setting off in near full lock.

Is anyone hearing the clicking when not near full lock ?

I will try CV joint tests you mention above Dstev

Thanks

Mine is on full lock.

It's worse when reversing on full lock onto my slightly uphill driveway.

I don't even need to have the windows down to hear it.

Just to make things a little clearer: the symptoms I had weren't exactly the same as a CV joint on the way out, but I found I could replicate it by using the tests I mentioned before.

When the car is stationary with both windows down, the clicking could be heard when turning the wheel lock to lock. It could also be heard at times when moving the wheel left and right around the straight ahead position. I also heard the noise whilst driving at 30mph and the weight of the car shifted left to right, whilst going into a corner.

It was quite tricky to consistently replicate the noise at first.
