Octavia 4x4 strangeness

Featured Replies

Hello everybody newboy here. I have an 02 4x4 Octavia with some strange faults. Has anybody else had any problem with the exhaust hitting the floor when the car is hot if you drive through cold water? Dealer has replaced part of exhaust and said that only TTs suffer from this. Also dead spot when accelerating hard from say 2nd at nearly full revs. When you change up to 3rd the engine loses power for a second before coming back on song. Does not appear to be turbo lag - certainly my old Nissan 200sx never suffered the same.

The power loss sounds similar to when I had a faulty fuel pump. Apparently quite common on the 4x4's and doesn't log any fault codes.

The problem with your exhaust is common on all 4x4's on this platform as I've heard of it on at least TT's, R32's and V6 4motions.

I have the loss of power as described above, also got the fault code intermitent pressure drop at turbo ect.

I fitted a boost guage and it's possible to see the dip in the boost. got it going in the garage again soon, they say they will be looking for a split hose, but since it's intermitent, I think it's more likely to be the dump valve or the N75 valve.

the "power drop" is normal mate, mine does it now even after being re-mapped and its lag, if you use a slightly less agressive gear change(keeping it as slow as 1 second as opposed to a 1/2 second change) then it should be fine. i find that if i change like i would in a petrol and do it as quick as possible and be heavy on the clutch when re-engaging the gearbox it does this. you'll soon learn to drive around this and do it without even thinking :)

I've had the car since it was new so don't think I'll get any better at changing gear, the problem being this happens when your in a hurry, so lower revs and slower changes sort of defeat the object. 2 dealers have found no fault. As for the exhaust I guess I'll live with it.

What does anybody think of the 1st to 2nd gearchange? And does anybody tell their insurance company when they chip these?

I would hope that everyone informs their insurers of all modifications. It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to make a false statement or withhold information for the purposes of obtaining a certificate of motor insurance, and it may also invalidate your policy.

i also find the 5 speed box a little notchy, i wonder what the 6 speed is like :rubchin: ;)

with the gearchange i'm not saying change up at low revs just dont change as quick as possible. that extra 1/2 second to change gear gains in smoothness and speed i think :)

Bengie what DV are you running? I don't suffer the problems you mention.

had the same problem. Ive been told this is a VAG problem, aparently the syncro takes a while to catch up at very high revs when changing up so if you change too quickly its hard to select the gear, just apply gentle pressure to the stick & wait for it to drop in.

My box is in bits shortly & all the syncro etc will be checked

i have a servicable alloy one i got from AMD, its recently been serviced too. did it on the standard map and standard DV too.

so if you change as hard and quick as possible there is absolutely no delay in the power coming in at all?

Instant power as soon as I re-apply the throttle. The turbo will still be spinning if you're changing at highish revs and doing a quick change so there should be no noticable lag.

Have you got a CAI or standard airbox?

I am new at all this. Whats a CAI? and whats a DV. Car is bog standard. I understand that to avoid turbo lag you need to have revs on which obviously when going from 2nd to 3rd flat out you must have surely. No cure for crappy 1st to second change then?

rents octy 4x4 hasnt suffered any of the above *touch wood*

did it with standard DV and 3rd party DV

did it with standard airbox and 3rd party airbox

did it with standard exhaust and blueflame system

did it with standard map and after re-map

maybe my fuel pump is playing up then as i also get a running lean fault code intermittently.

Worth checking for sure. My turbo was suspected as faulty and removed and checked before the problem was found. You need to get a pressure gauge on the pump whilst the car is under load (preferably on an RR). If it's working correctly you should see a pressure equal to the rating of your FPR (e.g 3bar or 4bar) + boost pressure. That's why it's most noticable when changing gear (becasue you demand full boost when you put your foot down after the change) and in my case at peak torque too (3.5k ish) as that's when the turbo will be running the most boost. At these peaks the fuel pump could be expected to meet a pressure of 4.5/5.5bar.

Hopes that makes sense Bengie, if you want to chat more about it you can get me on MSN (ID is in my profile).

EDIT: Also I didn't even have any falt codes so your running lean code suggests yours could possibly be worse.
