Control arm bush 1K0 407 182 install

I tried to push a new one of these into the control arm using a vice but it did not go too well, the rubber flange at the front got tore up to shreds. Lashed a bit of cone spray on it before pushing it in but to no avail

The new bush has a thick rubber flange on each end while the old one that I removed has this type of flange on only one end and a very thin flange on the other. Yet the part number is the same.

Is there a trick I'm missing with these? Do I need to pare down the flange on the end that's going into the control arm first?
