Sudden Engine Death 1.8t...

Featured Replies

I had my 4X4 1.8T Octavia chipped about 3 weeks ago here in Romania. I only had the car (second hand) about a month before and never had long trips (>200km).

So I strated to experience this sudden engine death only during my first long drive (after chtunning). It occurs randomly mainly in following conditions:

- after at least 200 km driven on motorway

- when releasing throtle and opening clutch to change gears or close in to the toll (this is annoyng - I loose power steering)

If speed high enough and I close the clutch it wil restart imediately otherwise with the starter

The only lamp coming on is the battery.

After the first occurence I went to garage:

The VAS diagnose tool reported a fault stored at "engine electronics" something like : ... voltage to low terminal 30...

They "shaked" fuse and told me that some contact problem did this for a very short time and it wont happen again.

But it did - about 10 times on 6000km european roundtrip.

Any advice? - where to look?

I am planning to take it back to the garage but any feedback before that is more than wellcome.

voltage to low terminal 30...

Isn't that the starter motor terminal?

This looks similar to the code I get when I disconnect the battery.

terminal 30 is the battery feed .

many chipped cars get this.. mine did it right after being chipped.

good blast down the road.. reset with vagcom all ok.

Paul,

You say "many" .... hmm... how many? Call for a poll?

Reseting with vagcom - you mean clear the fault log? I dont think this will eliminate the cause

Robert

would assume if re-occuring would be batt / fuse / alternator?

Check you haven't a faulty battery.

on the 3 cc i've fitted i have had the same fault code on my 1552 i recon this is because i have disconnected the engine ecu thus terminal 30 has low voltage !

If the ECU power is taken away or you have a dead battery then the KL30 fault will be logged in the ECU.

I would suspect the car in question has a wiring (probably earth) fault and this fault appearing is just a concequence of a bad connection. The main earth points to check would be the ones bolted to the chassis underneath the battery tray. However if as you say this has only happened since chipping then it could be that the small earth point just in front of the ECU on the scuttle panel has become dislodged on removal/refit of the ECU, may be worth checking the connections in the ECU plugs while in the same area. It could also be a dry joint on the chip itself.

Hope this helps in some way and you get it sorted soon.
