Hi guys please help ! ,,

I'm a time served mechanic that works in a German car specialist however I've never come across this I'm not the best with electrical side I'm more a nuts and bolts guy than a wire and sparks guy

I have 2 2008 Octavia estates both 1.9 tdi both cars were bought from a fleet company my wife's has a mere 225000 mile still on same clutch fly and turbo ???? With full service history is running excellent how mine has only covered a mere 126000 mile and is in major trouble

A few days ago while driving the dash went off completely all gauges speedo rev counter temp gauge the lot the lights and engine stayed running and the stereo and heater stayed on the low fuel/ low external temp buzzer went crazy this all lasted only a few seconds and then everything came back

This has happened a few times today but this time the srs light stayed on and while the buzzer was going crazy all the warning lights were flashing

I pulled over and turned the car off to find the dam thing would start and then cut straight out. I tried to lock and unlock the doors but still the same I left it sat for ten mins then she fired to life and I drove her home with the dash failing and the buzzer going maybe 3 times in a ten min drive

If any one has any ideas I would be greatful I've seen a lot of similar problems but with the mk1 saying needs a dash repair or replacement

Thanks for the support guys I've read with vcds and got loads of intermittent faults they are saved to lap top at work I'll upload later I'll also remove clocks to check connection and post updates

Iv had the same for two weeks and it's the cluster

Iv had everything checked and also had to leave it at least 15 mins after turning it of the auto electrician said there were loads of faults after a scan I took the dash board of very easy to do applied an electrical gel to the back but this is only temporary a fix for a week or so it comes back so it's of to get soldered seemingly a common problem.the beeping was driving me nuts starts just a few times the constant hope this helps and look forward to hearing of ur fix.there is pics on here some where about what needs to be soldered think it was a killer that was his name I have the pics but don't know how to or if I'm allowed to post

ok so a quick update did a vcds read and got loads of faults also did batterey and charge check she is charging at 14.2 volts unloaded and 13.8 loaded so charge rate ok however battery check showed a low charge in battery so cleared all faults and went for a 2 hour drive with minimal electrical use (i only do around 10 miles a day round trip to and from work maybe 30min max driving) and no problems then then yesterday did same with no problems i've ordered a bosch silver battery and gonna fit it on tuesday when back at work along witha set of glow plugs i do think that the cluster is the problem but a fault has shown wiyh the battery so it wont hurt

As you have 2x octavias

 

I would take out the cluster of the other car and try it in this one (it obviously it won't allow the car to start and will cause a few other faults) but if you clear the faults you can then see if you get the same faults due to not seeing the cluster. 

 

You also have a faulty ignition switch, get that changed as the cluster requires a permanent and switched live

Thought of that but is only intermittent so unless I could swap dash and drive car for a few days it wouldn't help

I've found a company on net that will rebuild my cluster for £150 so if happens again I'll send it away

You should change the ignition switch first

 

You can buy a used cluster on ebay for very little money. Also the cluster may be fine and you could have a wiring issue

Ok so quick update

Used car a lot over last few days done some really long journeys and so far no lights buzzers or anything all seems well scanned this morn with vcds and no codes anywhere apart from glow plugs so tomorrow I'll fit new glow plugs and a battery then fingers crossed

I've had exactly the same problem in the past.

Same faults occurred last year. The car would intermittently start but most of the time it failed to start. This was around a very wet time of the year and initially I thought it might be water ingress in the clocks.

Long story short, sent clocks away for testing with no faults found. Had them refurbished anyway as all my banging of the cluster had resulted in in an error on the Maxidot.

Car ran fine for ages and a few months back the fault occurred once again. Nothing since may I add.

Haven't replaced the battery in the car and touch wood it's fine at the moment. But the general trend on the forum seems to point to a battery issue. If it happens again I'll probably change the battery to eliminate that.

Ok so this morning on way to work all hell let loose if any more lights had come on my car would have been visible from space

They stayed on for want seemed to be ages so in anger punched the top of dash and they all went out so not sure now which way to jump I think a battery as I now it's on it's last legs then if the problem still there I'll send clocks away

I did wonder about water as last year I had a cracked screen and I didn't get it replaced for a few months when I noticed I could push the screen out at the top corner with my hands and the floor on my side was wet I'll keep you updated thanks for the help guys

As I said before in an earlier post it's the cluster had the same for months

ok so finally changed the cluster got a used one from ebay luckily i know someone to code it in and put my correct milage in (used clocks showed 185k ive only done 130k) at same time changed battery for a bosch s40010 silver and a set of bosch glow plugs now its a matter of wait and see !!!!!!!!!!!

hopefully this will cure all faults as next service due in a few thousand miles and the cam belt is due also going to paris in it in may
