Help! - Driving license points details: 5 year record needed but can only find 4.

Featured Replies

I'm researching into getting my first insurance cover on my Octavia after being on company car insurance for 10 years and have a little bit of an issue...

Most insurers ask for 5 years info regarding points etc, yet the DVLA only hold records for 4. I've had points at various stages and unfortunately have misplaced the former paper counterpart, which would give me the info for the '5th' year. Naturally I want everything to be above board so need 5 years info, not 4.

How would I go about finding out my record that comparison sites and most insurers require? I've rang DVLA and they were quite robotic and just said 'the issue is between you and your insurer'...

Any help or advice would be really appreciated!

Do you not have in a safe place Insurance Certificate & Policy and importantly a 'Schedule' for 2016, 2015, 2014 that you can look at which shows what you 'Declared for 2011, 2012 etc.

Get your 'codes' for convictions from there.

Not quite sure what you mean? Basically I gave work permission to access my license record a few years back so they can make sure I'm not disqualified etc and that's about it. Essentially car insurance is new to me. I've never been given any insurance details, schedule or policy regarding cover for my company vehicle at any time.

I'm being sent any details of claims etc from work but driving license records are down to me.

I'm guessing I'll have to ring up my chosen insurer and explain this issue and take it from there, but naturally i want a ball park figure from a comparison site with the correct driving history details entered.

That's it then isn't it; access your licence record and print a copy (or screen grab if you don't have a printer).

Insurance Brokers on Briskoda are good for Ball Park figures on Insurance, they actually can quote to the penny and can discuss your circumstances.

Not really, I'm being asked for the last 5 years for quotes online yet can only access 4 years via the DVLA as they only keep them for this long. So quotes aren't accurate and if I proceeded I'd essentially have invalid insurance, if for arguments sake, I had points that came off my license 5 years ago and I hadn't made them aware.

Thanks, I'll certainly look into that. Just seems odd that if you've lost your old and now defunct paper license then you'd have no accurate record of your points prior to the past 4 years but most insurers ask for 5 and sometimes more?!

Well if an issue do not use 'Most', use the ones that can deal with the information you can provide.

I'll get what quote I can via comparison sites with the information that I have then call the best priced provider and explain the situation.

Could you check your bank account, and payments made in year five for anything that could be fine related?

I suppose I could but that would be quite a laborious process and even then it wouldn't give me accurate dates of the offence nor the correct codes etc.

Is it just me or is this a grey area? It would surely make sense for DVLA to keep 5 years of records as it appears the vast majority of insurers or at least comparison sites ask for this length of time. Either that or insurers should only ask for 4 years. Still a little bit in the dark about it all.
