Time to remove and re-fit rev counter 'glass' and price of part.

Featured Replies

As per title really. Our brand new Yeti had a scratch on the plastic over the rev counter from new (collected 23rd December). We reported this at the first opportunity after christmas as the dealer was closed for 5 days.

Today I returned expecting to book it in for replacement and they virtually accused me of making the scratch and are wanting to try and polish it out in some way. I am not happy with this one tiny bit as we paid for a new car and I want it rectified properly.

I'd like to know how much the replacement would cost them so I can go there informed.

Its the sales manager who is being sticky over it. I think the salesman is a bit embarassed by him. I am annoyed as in the last 2 months we've spent 20k and my mum has spent 12.5k with them on my recomendation. I am also looking to buy a Superb 3 within the next few months and they could loose that trade.

I have the home address of the owner of the dealership and if it comes to it I shall write to him directly and involve Skoda service, but for the next discussion I want to be prepared with prices etc.

The dealer is ***************. They have been good so far and I hope they come good this time. I shall post back here with the outcome.

Dealer name removed at OP's request

I really don't think the glass will be available as a separate part , they will probably have to replace the whole instrument cluster .

I would agree with the above comment about the part.

And sorry, but writing to the home address of the owner seems a very petty thing to do and could easily put their back up. You are much better going through the correct channels of first complaining formally to the Dealership, then making a formal complaint to Skoda UK. That way you keep your "Rights". At worst you could always formally reject the car, but there are procedures to follow to do that.

Does the PDI guy wear a ring?.

Why bother about the cost if it's their fault?.

Keep it professional and aloof.

If you actually read my post you'll see I said I would write to the owner 'if it comes to it'. At the moment I am trying to follow the procedure, dealing with them first and then if it isnt settled, Skoda service.

I dont think thats 'petty'. Its called having a plan.

At the moment I am interested in the cost as they are saying they want to mess about polishing out the scratch as 'the part and labour to replace it will cost them a fortune'. Thats the words of the sales manager, quoted verbatim. This was during our conversation yesterday when he virtually accused me of scratching it myself and trying to blame them. My view is we paid 20k for a new undamaged car and I want just that.

I've seen a fair few polished up plastic screens on measuring instruments over the years in my day job. They never seem to come completely good and on some they've gone slightly opaque in the polished area over the following years.

Its a pretty noticable scratch right in your view during the day when the backlight isnt bright.I imagine it might have been someones ring, or a bit of grit on a cleaning cloth.

Clive, thanks for your post. You are right, I imagine it would at the very least be the whole front piece and maybe the back cluster too.

I did read what you wrote, and I stick with what I said, writing to the home of the owner of the dealership is not the way to go about it, and could easily backfire. If you must right to him then do it as the MD of the company, and to their registered address. that way it is official and correct, and carries much more weight if you need to take it further.

If the Sales manager is being intransigent then get in touch with Skoda UK and complain to them.

And I agree with Clive, the glass is not a separate part, so if it needs to be replacing it will be the complete dash unit, speedo, rev counter, maxidot etc.

Graham, you are right. I shouldn't post these things when I am wound up, and certainly I was rude to you for which I apologise unreservedly. While it was very much a course of last resort in my mind, you are right it would probably go the wrong way writing to him at home. As it stands I am waiting for the sales manager to get back to me, I still don't like the polish option and would like to be prepared with some actual numbers for the replacement cost if or when he starts on about the cost again.

I've pm'ed someone to ask them to remove the dealer name from the post as until its resolved one way or another that is also a bit unfair.

Post in anger, repent at leisure eh?

Sorry again, e

No problem.

I've learnt from experience that the best way to make a complaint is to do it the official and correct way first; the gloves coming off are a last resort.

I suspect that they know they've done it, and therefore it will not be a warranty job but out of their purse, and possibly the sales department's bonus. And as they will have to replace the whole unit I suspect (know) it will not be cheap. I would be on the phone to SUK as soon as they start quibbling and I would tell them I was doing it, Dealer's don't like getting bad reports!!

Good luck and hope it gets sorted out.
