Changing the Bolero MIB 1 with Amundsen MIB1 or MIB2

Recommended Posts

I am investigating the necessary parts for changing the standard Bolero MIB with Amundsen navigation. My car is an Octavia 2013 model.

1. Is it possible to replace a 2013 MIB1 Bolero with a MIB2 Amundsen? Of course including changing everything: control unit, display, connectors, antena...

2. Can somebody help me with the original PN for all the Amundsen pieces? I found this ones for MIB 1 but i wanted to be sure they are the good ones:

- control unit: 5E0035864A or 5E0035874A. I really couldn't find anywhere the difference between this PNs.

- display: 5E0919605D BIO. Again a lot of options here with A, B, C, D , E, J, H letters in the end. I assume BIO is coming from the satin black color and aluminium insertions.

- cable connector: 5E5035572A

- antena: 5Q0035507B

Thank you

First thing that's gonna scupper you is Component Protection (CP). The new (or replacement) MIB2 unit won't be accepted by the car because they aren't coded to each other. You'll end up with a display stating "Component Protection Activated" and limited functions available.

I'd look at asking the dealers to remove CP from the car and original unit, and see if they're okay doing this. Second, the maps and navigation are a different issue, and it's possible you might end up with a fully working Amundsen unit with no maps or navigation working. It's happened before, and made the whole process worthless (except for the considerable money spent).

Ok. So no MIB 2. But are this problems applying to Amundsen MIB 1 also? If i change my Bolero with an Amundsen from the same generation (2013) it should work right? I understood that even from the same generation you must to some VCDS encoding for starting navigation but not so complicated.

About the price... of course i am not thinking to buy it from the dealers. They have a huge price. It can be found cheaper at retailers like Augsburg Int.

Thank you for your support

MIB1 also has CP activated. The problem will be the same with either MIB1 or MIB2, I only specified MIB2 in my earlier answer as that is what you asked about.

Component Protection will need to be removed for the unit to work as a music system. Then you'll need to have the maps and navigation activated which involves a licensing fee to the maps providers when the systems are fitted at the factory. Up until now I've not heard of the main dealers being able to activate the maps and navigation on a retrofit unit, although they can remove the CP is they want to (and Skoda agree).

It makes no difference where you buy the unit from, it will either need to be activated in the vehicle after fitting, or preactivated by other means before fitting, or some other means of making it work.

You're not going to be able to buy a second hand unit, fit it, do some coding with VCDS, and have it all work. At the moment I'm in the process of updating my MIB1 Columbus to an MIB2 Columbus. All told it started out as a £1500 project, and that should just about work okay. Admittedly, I have the Canton sound system which makes £650 addition to the install, but it's not cheap and it's not easy.

It's clear now. It's better to be careful when you buy a new car what options you chose from the beginning. Because afterwards it's more difficult and expensive to change them. I will close the topic. Thank you.
