Problem related to the gearbox appeared this morning.

Drove the car yesterday, all fine. Started it this morning and the gears were very difficult to select. Ended up doing most of my commute in 2nd.

My mechanical knowledge of vehicles is pretty minimal so I have no idea whether it’s something major like the clutch or gearbox, or something simple like a linkage.

I can shift through the box normally without the engine running, if that indicates anything useful.

Am I likely to be in for a huge bill ????

First thing to do would be to check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder, and look for leaks on the slave. It may be that the hydraulic system is either low on fluid, or developed a leak allowing air into the system. Unlikely to be clutch or flywheel as it has happened over night.

 

Being able to engage gears with the engine off is normal, as even with the clutch disengaged with the gearbox in neutral and the engine running, the input shaft will still be turning within the transmission.

 

Start with the hydraulics first, easiest and cheapest option.

This happened once about 4 months ago for 1 short journey but has been fine since ... until this morning.

It sounds a bit like the gear linkages need adjustment. Symptoms identical to what I suffered. Did the adjustment - like driving a different car! It's not hard to do, took me 10 minutes.

[pedant] brake reservoir [/pedant] Both systems use the same reservoir, but the clutch takeoff is higher up the side.
