Coolant light on - help!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had my Octavia vRS 5 days now. Went out to start it this morning and when its started, the coolant light flashes on with the three loud beeps described in the manual. It then keeps flashing.

Manual says check the coolant - It's red, not frozen, and up to the max line (when cool)

Manual say check the fuse - No blown fuses in the fusebox I can find - Is there another fusebox under the bonnet?

Manual says do not drive - take the car to the dealer.

Anyone had anything like this?

Cheers

I had this happen to me after running my car for about 5 miles after the conversion. Turned out although the coolant had been topped up, the car ran a while, then topped up again.... It must have fed more through the system as i was driving and I'd nearly emptied the coolant tank entirely.

Topped up again, and now its totally fine. Never heard of that going off when the coolant is all present and correct though. Can only assume maybe whatever sensor senses the lack of coolant has gone a little a.w.o.l?

Hi

In the first two years of ownership between 1000 and 30,000 miles, had this alarm condiution on my 51 Octavia 4x4 on very cold mornings with the car parked facing downhill. Switched engine off, restarted and if the alarm condition re-appeared, added anti freeze to lift the level in the expansion tank from half way between low and high marks to near the high mark.

Not had a repeat since warranty ran out 15 months ago

If you then turn off the engine and turn it back on, does it still flash?

If not, chances are it's just a sensor that's gone, so it'll be safe to drive it to a dealer to get them to look at it...

Cheers guys for your help.

I tried it 3 separate times so far this morning, same every time.

Just rang the dealer, they didnt sound too concerned so its booked in in Thurs (unless I can find someone else with VAG diagnostic stuff in Newcastle)

Out of interest its parked on the flat at the mo, but it was damn cold here last night, about -6.

Cheers, will keep you updated

I had similar issue on my old Octavia RS. The expansion bottle and level sensor were replaced initially, then some time later, the engine temp. sender was also replaced under warranty. All was fine after that.

Had similar problems on both our Octys, if you stoped the car imediately & restarted it the light would come on again, once it had warmed for about a minuite stop, restart & its fine. Both times it was sensors & reosnably inexpensive

you have checked the levels & the engine temps OK so nothing to really worry about before the dealer checks it

Spot on.
