Newbie - Winter wheels

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm the proud owner of a 2014 Scout as of last week - I love it.  I'm trying to sort out some Winter wheels - my petrol flap indicates I can drop to a 16" wheel from the 17" alloys on now (205/55/16). My hopefully simple question is that when I've gone online at mrwinterwheels the recommended steel tyre is 5x112, width 6", offset 48mm. Centre bore 57.1

Now there's someone locally selling some Golf steel wheels which match the specifications above exactly but state the offset to be 50mm.  I've never bought wheels before so I wonder whether a difference of 2mm is in any way significant but thought I'd ask here...I may still go for the new ones but the ones on sale seem a bargain so want to consider them.

My other option is crossclimates, and I see they get recommended here also.

Anyway,  all help appreciated.  Great car, the only niggle so far is the washer top up location - madness!

2mm will make no difference at all.

Your speedo will be out by about 4% though.

Welcome. Enjoy the Scout.

In reverse order - ignoring the washer bottle - I'd certainly consider 4 season tyres on the original 17" wheels if I was starting from scratch again. Saves storing extra wheels and swapping twice a year.

Like others, I have 16" winter tyres (Continental) to replace the 17" Summer tyres on my Superb. I also acquired some used VW alloy wheels and had them refurbed satin black. They work well.

I don't think 2mm would make much difference to the fitting. Do double check the PCD and centre bore. I've had to wrestle off wheels that were tight on the centre bore and grind some paint off when refitting.

Our newish Octavis is being left on new summer Michelins for this winter to see how it survives.

I used all-season tyres on my recently-departed '10-plate Scout. They were the perfect compromise.

The Scout is not really a sports car, so any negligible loss of summer performance wasn't an issue.

I used Falken Euro Allseason tyres and was very impressed with them. Saved on upfront costs & on changing wheels twice a year (which I still do with my vRS).

Enjoy the car!!

Whether the speedo is inaccurate, and by how much, will depend on the tyre section and profile fitted.

To go from standard scout 225/50/17 to 205/55/16 gives a difference of just under 4%. That's what I measured on my car when I switched to my winters.

In reply to your original question, yes the Golf wheels you asked about will definitely fit, no problem.

If 205/60-16s are fitted the difference from the original 225/50-17s is less than 1%.

Yes, but the op specifically mentioned 205/55/16.

Agree with Philbes, I have a non-scout and 205/55/16 is a standard fit as are the 225/45/17 that I actually have. I'd be amazed that the extra profile used on the scout for the 17's wasn't carried over to the 16's.

In fact, given the huge amounts of clearance to the arch I reckon a 205/60/16 would be OK on my car!

Don't have time to work out the codes for the scout, but try this document:

The Alpin5 winters I fitted to my Octavia were a higher profile than standard (55, I think - will check) the online tyre calculator said increased rolling circumference would be increased by slightly less than 5%, giving a slightly higher gearing - My speedo, checked against a separate GPS, now reads exactly correct, suggesting that it originally was reading that percentage high (which would be expected)
