Thanks BP. That looks like where it was on the driver's side.  I just sort of prodded it and it worked - the drum pretty much fell into my hands.

Now I've had a reminder, I'll give it another go.  After that, I'll have to call it a day as daughter needs her car in the morning. It's due for service and mot in not many weeks so if I fail, my trusty garage can sort it for her. She can manage until then.

Thanks for your help anyway both. Much appreciated. Long time since I've played about with drums.

Unlike what was written in another post, your aim is to push the bottom end of that wedge (where vertical spring is attached) upwards, not down.

Use hole in drum and flat blade screwdriver to lever it up while preventing drum rotation.

You can also get someone to apply the foot brake to release the pressure on the wedge in order to get it pushed up.

This can also be done when adjusting up again.

This is a job I need to do on my partner's Fabia too. The brakes stick on overnight frequently.

Added info.

Thanks BP and HMR. Useful tips for next time.

I did have to admit defeat but luckily she's had no more trouble since so maybe it was mostly the driver's side.

I'm going to get the garage to put new shoes on when it goes in, as daughter is moving away from home, so want the car to be as fettled as possible for her 🙄😏

You won't see the wedge. 'Poking' won't do anything - you have to lever the wedge up to slacken tension, using the hole in the drum as a a pivot.
