Help picking new Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi guys back on the forum after 5 years of absence. Was away trying other things. Always had the Skoda Bug.

Im looking for a Skoda Octavia VRS.

The reason im posting is i want a car with a high spec. Is there anything that is not included as standard that i should be on the look out for?

What additional extras would you recommend?

Thanks

Inkey

winter pack

i have a bad back and the heated seats makes it the comfortable place for me! the heated windscreen is good too

having driven one with ACC i will be ordering my next one with that too

You haven't said if new or used, so will cover all bases...

If you go for an early one,  Cruise control wasn't standard so check it has it.

Winter pack is useful with the heated windscreen, heated front seats and heated washer nozzles. My heated seats are on most days and the heated screen is being used most mornings at the minute whilst the weather is cold.

Canton sound system for me is a must, if you like your music. It doesn't distort when you turn it up and the subwoofer is quite punchy. My mate has an Audi S4 with the upgraded B & O system and he was quite impressed by Canton.

Infotainment options are pretty much Bolero (no nav) Amundsen (lower nav) Columbus (higher nav). I wanted built in Nav, so for me Columbus nav is nice and you get the Colour Maxidot trip computer with it (also a separate option). Newer (2015+ I think) Bolero and Amundsen units which are "MIB 2" have a bigger screen (6.5in) and a higher resolution than earlier units and are much better if you don't go for the top end Columbus.

I've never owned a car with Keyless entry and start before, but have really grown to like KESSY. Very handy not having to get the key out and sometimes it makes it easier getting the little lad in and out of the car.

Beyond those I'm not sure I'd miss some of the other options I have:

High Beam Assist - Good but can be enabled with VCDS if not specced from factory

Park Assist - Front sensors are useful and the sides can be sometimes too. Never used the park feature. A nice to have rather than essential.

Crew Protect Assist - haven't noticed this in action but may be useful from a safety perspective if ever in an accident.

Front assist - Could be useful one day but probably not "essential"

As per opening, I'm not sure if you are buying new but it took me ages to find a used one with such a good spec. If buying new you can go nuts with the options list and the price can ramp up easily, and they aren't known for holding their value well.

ahenners, really useful post. I'm looking for a high spec vRS petrol estate, '14 plate-ish, so useful info.

Cheers, dunc

I specced the following when buying my estate:

Black design pack plus: black grille surround, mirrors, roof rails; 19" extreme alloys, privacy glass and colour maxidot display.

Panoramic sunroof

Leather

Winter pack: heated front seats, washer nozzles and windscreen

Spare wheel

Lane assist - was standard on later cars, but possibly not on earlier ones?

I have enabled High Beam Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition (lane assist is required for these to be enabled) and retrofitted a rear view camera, using VCDS to change the necessary coding.

Other options that were available include: DSG (standard on 4x4 vRS) park assist, ACC, cornering foglights (again, can be done via VCDS) variable boot floor, heated rear seats, memory folding mirrors, electric seats, Canton sound, Columbus nav, electric boot, KESSY, wireless phone charger, Smartlink, premium Bluetooth and WLAN connectivity. Late models were also available with DCC adjustable dampers.

I may have missed some out... :D

As others have said, the winter pack is great - the heated seats and windscreen are fantastic. Not used my heated rear seats yet :-)

ACC and lane assist are great on my commute, though I have a DSG ... not sure how useful ACC would be on a manual as the auto will slow down / accelerate through the gears.

Columbus nav is a good option too due to the size of the screen, and the HDD based nav.

Not got Canton or KESSY unfortunately, so can't comment on either.

The sensors all round are V.useful too - keep forgetting how big the car is!

I have a VCDS so I will be able to enable some of the addons.

Which can be enabled or quickly retrofitted?

Petrol Engine /DSG.

Also be a bit careful with the options list.

You dont get all your money back at resale, so unless you're keeping the car a long time, take it easy and dont spend too much.

How do you tell what the car has by looking at it from advert.

Some of the cars I have looked at have add ons that are not listed on the site im buying from.

There isn't an easy way, short of contacting the dealer and finding out. Some can be spotted easily if the right images are there in good enough quality:

Front Assist - radar visible in lower front bumper

Front sensors - should be able to spot the sensors on the front bumper

Park assist - Sensors front and rear, button with steering wheel on in front of gear lever (near VRS mode, lock/unlock buttons).

Navigation - Top right infotainment button says "Nav" instead of "Setup". Bigger screen has nearly no surrounding plastic between screen and buttons, smaller screen does.

Cruise Control - If image zooms enough, the non cruise control left hand stalk has only arrows and headlight symbols on it. Cruise stalk has a rocker switch on top and numerous cruise related symbols

Adaptive Cruise Control - Rocker switch on top of left stalk sets distance rather than on/off

Heated windscreen - Button above "setup" in the HVAC controls isn't blanked off and has the heated windscreen symbol

Front Heated seats - Button next to the HVAC temp display on each side isn't blanked off, but instead has a seat symbol on it.

Rear Heated seats - Has buttons with seat symbol under rear air vents

Canton sound system - Tweeter covers above the ends of the dashboard in driver and passenger doors will have a silver strip with "Canton", will also be a black box on the left hand side of the boot which houses the subwoofer.

Colour maxidot - display between speedo dials will display colour and is higher resolution than standard B + W

Kessy - front exterior door handles have slight indent in the handle and steering wheel column has push button in place of where key would be inserted.

Electric assisted front seats - has buttons on the outer edges of the seats, rather than the usual levers to adjust positioning.

Black Pack - Black front grille and Black wing mirrors

Black Pack extreme - same as above, but also with Xtreme 19" alloys and tinted windows

Sunset Glass - rear door windows and rear window tinted

Other stuff such as sunroof, leather, DSG should be more straightforward to spot ;)

This isn't the full options list either, but more of the ones that can be spotted due to slight visual differences.

Ask the dealer for a photo of the sticker in the boot, this has a list of codes on it. I can't remember right now but, there is a site to look these up on

This site will decode the options: http://igorweb.org/equidec.aspx

This site allows you to download a list of option codes to work through yourself: http://vag-codes.info/vag-option-codes

Might wanna tell some porkies about why you want the photo, if the seller finds out any optional extras he's not advertising they may try to increase the price
