PIR alarm sensor + IR CCTV?

Featured Replies

I have a PIR sensor in my garage linked to my intruder alarm system  (one that works in low and high temperatures). I'm looking to add a CCTV camera in there as well which has IR illumination.  This is probably a silly question for those who are familiar with the subject, but would the IR from the camera interfere with the PIR sensor (either produce false positives or reduce its effectiveness)?

I would say not. I think they are designed in a way so that full exposure to IR light does not trigger a false alarm, otherwise sunlight would set them off.

Only a differential change like something moving around should set them off.

Don't quote me on that though.

Could always change the garage PIR alarm sensor to a dual mode PIR/Microwave sensor as then both have to fire before it causes a positive alarm off.

yes, sorry it is a dualtec type already. That's what the alarm company said was best for a garage- i hadn't realised it used microwaves as well.

Thanks both for the replies. I will double check with the company before going ahead just in case.

Worth checking it is a microwave one, but does it have a pair of LED on it (some do)

One lights up for PIR detect, one lights up for microwave detect and sometimes colour change for active.

It that's the case, then just set the camera up pointing towards it and see if the sensor lights up?

But the IR illumination regardless won't set off both the IR and the microwave, so you should be fine.

BTW this is personal experience and I'm no expert in these sensors.
