Octavia VRS 2002 wont go in reverse

Featured Replies

Hello all,

After driving home and parking up on Monday night, I have got in my car on Tuesday morning and it wont go in reverse, it has never done this before, the clutch was changed 1000 miles ago, new slave cylinder and hydraulic pipe.  since then the gears have been a little notchy.  I have reset the cables this morning, but no difference, with the cables disconnected at the gearbox end the interior shifter moves as it should. I have tried to engage reverse by hand in the engine bay but it feels like its trying to push against something.

Any thoughts?

If this was done by a garage, tell them to sort it out.

If it was DIY, start by bleeding the clutch (cheap and easy, and my first thought was that the clutch wasn't disengaging properly).

Ive noticed that very occasionally mine refuses to go into 1st, as does a Subaru in the household, in both cases they'll engage first if you rev in neutral before selecting the gear.

@km666 has given me an other thought; if you can't get reverse, try selecting first or second at idle and lifting the clutch until you hear the revs drop as the engine tries to pull the car. Then clutch right down and try reverse again now you've moved the layshaft a little relative to the input shaft.

I have just turned the car round so I can start stripping the battery tray out to get proper access to the gear selector tower, just seems strange that it just stopped working, one of my friends was wondering if when the clutch was done if the gearbox was man handled out of the way using the gear selector tower as a handle damaging something. I will find out in the next couple of days.
