Flywheel...or something else...

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I'm back in the Skoda family having purchased a MkII (07) Octavia diesel at the weekend (95k miles).

Frustratingly, I have just noticed a judder when the car is stationary and in neutral. As soon as I press the clutch, even slightly, the juddering stops. I don't notice it at all when driving.

I've spoken to my local garage and the mention of flywheel came into conversation with an estimate of £1000!

Having looked at a few forums, signs of a flywheel problem is a judder when the clutch is depressed, not whilst it's in neutral.

I purchased the car privately and thought I'd done my due diligence. Unfortunately an expensive 'miss'....but the tyres are ok!!

Any advice regarding what the problem may be and expected costs to repair would be great.

If it is a flywheel, should I stop driving immediately or can I keep going for a few more weeks?

Thanks all

Martin

Welcome back to the team of the make..

Sorry with no luck..

I believe you can go on driving it for some more days or few weeks just try not pressing and fast accelerates and it could go ok..

As for costs you better get offers from an account of technicians.

Hi Akis,

Thanks for much for your reply. It's nice to be back!

Interesting reply, i'll keep the pressure off of the right foot and see how we get on!

You don't say whether this is a 1.9 or a 2.0 TDI, if it's a 1.9 then the DMF (dual mass flywheel) can be swapped for a SMF (single mass flywheel) for much less than £1000 - this isn't a downgrade, a SMF suits the 1.9 better than a DMF. I asked about the cost of this on here and was reliably informed it should be under £500 at a good indy. If it's the 2.0TDI then you can't do an SMF conversion, but it would still be considerably less than £1000.

To me it does sound like the DMF is the problem, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable will be able to suggest other solutions.

Sounds like a DMF to me too. Factor in a new clutch as well. It wouldn't make sense pulling the box out to replace the flywheel and not swapping the clutch as well.

Guys, thanks so much for your input.

Thanks Toby, fortunately it is a 1.9 so I'll ask the garage to give an idea on price difference. Makes sense to me.

Def Meaty, it may be a cost to swallow but at least it's all done in one go.

Thanks again guys. Very reassuring to hear impartial views from people in the know.
