Order has been dispatched. Will let you know tomorrow:)

Nope not a misprint, they were offering this same deal back in November - I ordered two packs at the time. The only thing different this time is that they're offering 2x PC cards with them - presumably to try and get rid of them as more and more laptops have wireless built-in. I just went for the USB option.

Our company account for IT bits is with them, so I'm sure someone would have let me know :)

Cheers for that  Just ordered one...

Saaaah! more bits to play with

I got a similar package from Dabs before Xmas for not much more. Very pleased with it. Much easier to set up than I expected. Although the wireless range is not fantastic - see it as a security measure :)

PC world have a similar offer for non-laptop users, a linksys router and USB adaptor for

Main thing to watch out for when setting up file sharing is any firewall you are running on the PC you want to setup to share files. You need to make sure your firewall on each box has the IP address range for all the machines on your home network (that you want to see the shared files from) in the trusted zone. If you don't change the default router settings for assigning IP addresses that will usually be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.n where n is => the number of boxes.

If using only the XP firewall this should be automatic if you use the Network Setup Wizard. For some reason I had to go in to the XP firewall settings and do it specifically on my old Dell box. Also had to specifically configure the Zone Alarm on my lap top.

Once set up you can use the shared folders on all the machines from any other or, if you want to, map a network drive to point at a folder on another PC. I found this really useful the other day when I had to quickly back up data before doing a risky reconfiguration on my main Sony Vaio box.I just mapped a drive to the old Dell and saved a copy of all the vital and rather large files to there. Much quicker than burning discs (although in the end I did that for some of the completely irreplaceable files as well ). Also useful for sharing an email database on the main box so that I can check mail from any machine but be sure that they are all using the same files. :)

does anyone know if "tiscali" enable wireless? i cant find anything on their web site.

The router I've bought, and can't get working, has a function where it clones the MAC address of your PC so that to your ISP it is indistinguishable from your PC in case they have insisted that you only use the connection on that one PC.

I haven't had to do that with ntl though and I shouldn't imagine tiscali are any different, I think ISPs have clauses in the terms and conditions specifying how far you can share your connection but as long as you don't propose you share it with your whole street you should be fine

There's usually never a problem setting up a home wireless networks with ISPs providing UK ADSL broadband. All your doing is providing your username and password to the wireless router, to enable it to access the provider, rather than an individual PC.

The only time I've had to use MAC cloning was with a cable internet provider, and that wasn't even in this country! :D

I have this router and use tiscali, 100% a OK. I have a wireless link for my laptops that works OK too

the router is easy to setup, there is the help prompt at all stages, for your firewall setup etc.

ie I can stop my daughters PC accessing the web at the time I feel is right too!

and setup access control lists, prevent opening sites with the word 'porn' in it.
